37 dollar double platinum spark plugs???

Postby hari-bhari » Thu Jun 19, 2003 3:01 pm

ha! get this, i went to meineke again and told him about the denso iridiums. i was like "i read online that the solaras take denso iridium IK20s, so if i buy them instead of those 37 dollar double platinum ones that toyota makes and bring them to you, will you put them in for me?" and he was like "Yea sure, that's exactly what i was going to use anyways." turns out his supplier charges him $37 bucks a piece for those same denso plugs and there are no 'toyota' plugs like he was tellin me the other day. i told him to just buy them online but he jus gave me a whole schpeal (sp?) about how he has to order from certain ppl so he can return them easily, etc etc. so finally i asked him if i could buy them on my own and bring them in to have them installed. and he said ok, but it wouldnt be warrantied, cuz theyre not from his supplier, even though theyre the same damn plugs! man the crap ppl put u through. oh well, i guess ill learn to install them myself, does anyone have a good place i can go for instructions? im a complete newbie, the only thing i have ever done to my car is changing a taillight bulb and disconnect the DRLs, but hey u gotta start somewhere. :P

LOL, come on man, don't you think its a little suspicious. He is Bull $hitting you about the plugs. Use common sense, if we can buy them for $10 and they retail for as high as $19.99-$29.99, why the hell would he be buying them for $37. He's obviously lying to you.

Do I get an answer?

in all honesty, i put them in when i put my S/C in. and i don't see HOW IN HELL you could install it w/o removing the whole intake chamber (that big silver thing). but flip says it's do-able with U joints and small hands.

It is doable, even with the SC allready in, but its very difficult. Its probally much easier to remove the SC or intake manifold

5SFE is very easy, you can complete it in 10 minutes. Just remove the top strut bar first, then pull out one of the spark plug wire (one by one, dont pull all of them out at same time). Use a socket that is for spark plug only, which has a piece of rubber in the socket. (i think its 14mm, just use your new plug to find the right size) The put it into the hole and gentlely rotate and push it. you will feel the socket fit onto the spark plug, then turn it counterclock wise. After you loose plug , just pull out out the tool and you will see the plug is nicely stay in the socket.

When you put in the new plug, go buy some lubricant for spark plug. apply some lubricant on the spark plug thread, then put the spark plug into the socket with rubber. Then put it in and thighten. I am not sure how many lb of pressure you should tighten it. Notice do NOT over tighten it, if you strip the thread inside the cylinder, then you are screwed, big time. then just put back the spark plug wire, make sure you push in tightly.

After you finish up, put your hand on top of the spark plug wire and feel if there is any unnormal viberation. If so, then there is a spark plug is loose

Wrong Spark Plugs Cause Problems

Postby ohallord » Mon Jul 07, 2003 10:02 am

I just got done paying over a 1000 dollars for my car. I took my car to get a tune up last year and did not want to pay the Dealer price. Well I was unaware of the type of plugs I needed.

That Cost me (1080).

The place I went (unamed right now) put in bosch Platinum plugs. They were wrong. And one Just blew apart. Litterally.

So make sure you get the right Plugs...

DUDE!! that really sucks man, im sorry. go back and fight with them to get your money back AND have them pay the repair. it is complete negligence on their part. you have to be able to prove that the spark plug was the cause of the problem though, and that they used the incorrect spark plugs, so take all your documentation, get a written bill of what you paid for the repair, and the reason for it (all in writing), and go fight them for it. don't be intimidated by them either, keep your game face on, and threaten to sue. also, talk to the manager or highest authority available, not some clerk. and if you get nowhere with the manager, call the corporate office and if they dont help, then call the better business bureau and file a complaint. ive had to do this kind of thing before, and you have to stick to your guns. fight for your rights!!!
