How Do You Get the Struts and Springs off?

i want to put aftermarket springs on and stuff but i dno how to get the strut and springs off. ive taken the wheel off, and taken those 3 bolts off ur supposed to, but i dno what to do next, please help me out so i dnt have to pay someone to do this for me, and i cnt use a spring compressor or a strut remover either

there are two bolts on the bottom that have to be removed as well... it should br pretty obvious once youre in there. Anything attached to the strut needs to be taken off to remove it...

check out autozone.com, they will have a how to for this.

Youre going to need a spring compressor as well if you dont want to have a 15 lb spring fly off the strut and hit you in the face... please be smart about it if youre going to do this yourself.

arent there bolts that connect the strut to the rotors and stuff? thats what im afraid to take off...and when i take those bolts off, will the strut and spring shoot off or something?

this is for a gen 3 camry but here, just like I told you... its on autozone's website. If you are trying to do your own work, seriously invest in a haynes manual, then you want have to ask these questions as often.

It really is fairly simple if you give it a shot man, just use a spring compressor and be careful.

nothing is going to shoot off without removing the top nut. Remove the top 3 nuts on the strut mount, the two bottom bolts on the lower part of the strut, and the abs/brake line nut and pull the strut/spring combo out of the fender. Then install the spring compressor and remove the top nut... it is all on the link i sent you.

Using a spring compressor isn't just a safety factor. You can strip the strut piston or damage the top mount if you try to remove the top nut while it's under pressure.

I think you have to use a spring compressor. If you don't compress the spring you won't be able to put the strut mount back on. That spring gets a lot longer when you unload it. That’s assuming you don’t blow your head off with the spring when it shoots apart LOL. I don’t jest, when I was in school I saw a guy take a spring in the leg. He went down like he had been shot and was promptly taken to the hospital. You can get a set of clamp-on spring compressors at Sears, or might be able to borrow some from Autozone (not to sure on what they offer loaner wise). Don't try to do this without the compressor, it's far too dangerous and it won't work.

yep. Last time i checked i think it was about $15 for a month of use for a spring compressor. Pretty cheap.

It's really not that hard to put in struts and springs, the only hard part is the rear struts.....
And for pete sake get a spring compressor before you work or have and idea on takin' apart the struts and springs.

Ok First Search This topic was covered many of times.. Replacing struts and springs takes a while especially if you dont know what your doing.. Get a spring compressor and all the proper tools. ... Prepare yourself to spend a whole day on this.. Since your a first timer
