solara or Acura 3.2 cl Type "S"

Hi guys,
I got to make an important decision this week, and I seek your help (opinion). Actually, I own a 2001 Solara SLE V6 (I just bought it 2 months ago), I like the car so much but actually I have the opportunity to trade it with a 2001 Acura 3.2 CL Type "S" plus some cash. I love Acura so much and I want to go for it.
If you would be in my place what you would do.

That's not even a choice. Go for the Acura, especially if it's a manual transmission. I've actually set that car as my target when modifying my Solara. Although I feel that I've matched or surpassed most of the CL S performance standards, the fact that it comes with those benefits from the factory gives it an advantage. Make the trade.

It depends on what you want! I still think the Solara looks better and is more luxurious... but then again, I'm basing my opinion off the previous CL... I haven't really gotten to know the newer model yet.

I think I read somewhere that the CL 6-Speed tranny had some problems... but if you know the car is in good condition, go for it!

acura 3.2 cl type s is a really nice car, my friend has one that is silver, fully loaded with navi. here's the catch, he has had the transmission replaced twice already, and its only at 50,000 miles. honda and acura have this thing with their transmissions where they keep on breaking. that is why honda implemented a 100,000 mile, 7 year warranty on their transmissions (don't know if this includes acuras). my friend with a 3.2 tl also had his transmission replaced once, and he is at 40k. so, even though the car was under warranty, i dont think i would want a car that is in the shop that much and stuff. that's just my opinion, but the car itself is pretty nice. the ride wont be as nice as the solara, however, its a lot stiffer. and finally, how the heck did u find a 3.2 CL where u can trade in your solara AND make some cash?!? i wanna know!!

The Acura is a phatter car but I'm guessing you will take a big hit ($$$$) trading in a 2 year old car you just bought. Just my .02.

CL-S has nice interior and exterior.

Solara's interior feels a bit cheaper compared to CL-S

Both cars' resale value won't be that high. CL-S is being discontinued because they don't sell well. TL is due for redesign.

CL-S' 5 speed auto is problematic. There were recalls and Acura extended the warranty. This should be your biggest concern.

xravexboix you are right, actually I'll be adding some cash to get the Acura (but it's still a good deal). The car has a 5 speed sportshift transmission (auto & manual). What attracts me the most about the car is the good deal + the colour. In fact, the Acura has the gold colour, the same colour as on the nissan 350 Z.
As a solara owner, I was planing to modd my car, I was planning to add a body kit, 18" wheels + tires, and tokico struts + eibach springs. A total cost of around 4000$.
I have the opportunity, now, to use this money for an exchange (with my solara) and get a 2001 Acura 3.2 cl "S".

I want to know which car is the most reliable and which car will require less reparation in the future (with less problems).

Thanks guys for your comments.

If you want a car with no problems stick with the Solara, My friend has a CL typeS and had to replace his tranny also. He almost got killed to when it went because he was on the high way doing about 70 and the car just decided on its own to shift into 2nd. He said it was like the brakes were slamed on. He also said if it wasn't for the fact that the was no gaurd rail and just grass on his side of the highway he would have been rear ended by the car behind him. The problem has to do with mainly the 3rd gear clutch pack, it just totally disintergrates and plugs up all the hoses for the transmission fluid and pan. Don't buy it.

Ratings for reliability this year (I heard this on CNN about a month ago... it highly differed from another announcement on CNN a few months before that)

1. Toyota
2. Hyundai
3. Honda

Yes... Hyundai is beating Honda. How? I'm not sure... they just are. The Solara would be your best bet for little or no maintenance while getting a CL-S may require your time to get parts replaced (if under warranty) and cost you money if you need parts (like that tranny replaced) after the warranty period. Most of us probably bought Toyota due to dependability and sacraficed some 'sporty-ness' and 'hp numbers', but in the long run... you can always say "Wanna race my 200k mile Solara against your 200k Camaro? Oh what? Your Camaro didn't last that long?" :P
Highest milage I've seen is on my Uncle's friend's MR-2... the 80s MR-2... it was around 320k :bday: Miles, not kilometers... about 60 miles = 100 km if you want to make the conversion
