Man last night my solara would not start, its a 2000 v6 with 53000 miles on the engine, the i jumped the car and the lights and power came back what seemed like full blast, and I tried to crank her and she just kept on making a clicking sound everytime i tired to start, my battery terminals are clean and I have been told to tap on the starter, which we even attempted, any ideas??

Test your battery and check for a good connection at the starter. Good luck.

Clicking sound = battery

Prolly not enough juice on the battery, measure the voltage. If it should start if you jump start with another car, if the battery is dead, the car will go dead soon after you jumpstart it.

if the battery is dead, you can still drive it w/ all the electronics working due to the alternator. It most likely will NOT recharge your battery enough though...

The average battery will last about 4 years. 5 absolute max (safely w/o risking a dead battery in the near future) If you can jump start it, that means the batt. was dead... if you still can't start it from a jump... something fishy is about!

Get it checked at autozone, pepboyz, etc! in my celica, when the alternator died..it took the battery with it...so get it looked into!

Last time i had a problem like that the starter had jamed. It may sound silly but if thats the case get a something like one of those rubber mallets and give the starter motor a few knocks while trying to start it. Just be sure not to damage it.

my friend who works at sears say that those batteries (the oem ones that come with the car) usually don't last very long, some even end up blowing up according to his experiences.

as mentioned earlier, i'd say to check the battery.

You got it.

If it's making the clicking noise and STILL not starting after you've jumped it you either:
a) need a more powerful jump (just to get it to a dealer/auto place to get a new battery...chances are it will die out as soon as you turn the car off)
b) need to clean the terminals and re-jump
c) tow time! *call me  *

I've noticed my Solara won't start/stalls as well. I still have my original Toyota battery at 58k miles. And when it does start, it'd idle real low and shutoff. Maybe time for a new battery?

I have a 99 v6 solara and had the same problem at 64k miles. It was hard to get it started for a month then it just didn't start at all. Turned out to be that the starter went bad. Got a new one for $200 and it's fine now.

starter problems

Postby guest » Sat Jul 12, 2003 1:32 pm

when starter is making clicking noises and you've checked all cable connections and battery and if those items have checked good. it means starter contacts and solenoid on the starter are burned. can usually get by with replacing starter contacts, if you can find someone to do the job for you, it will be a very inexpensive job, around 130 dollars. toyota starters do not usually go bad. toyota source
