Exhaust Leak

Postby JRector » Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:59 am

I just found out I have an exhaust leak and i have to replace fromt he manifold back to the cat. Would it be a good idea and cheaper to go to a junkyard and get one out of there or should i just buy one online, and how much would that run me?

Thanks Alot

Are you 4cyl or V6? Where is the leak coming from? ( From the flex joint? A crack somewhere? )

If the rest of the pipe is in good shape, a flex joint can be replaced. A crack can be welded. You may get a little more life out of the pipe if it's still solid.

Check with the dealer on the front pipe. It should be flanged before the converter, therefore not too expensive. If it is, then just have the flex replaced at a good muffler shop. Be sure they use one about the same diameter and length. You'll be just fine!

no, there is no flange before the converter, the converter is a piece of the ypipe itself.

The best thing u can do, is go to a exhaust shop, like mineke or watever, and have them cut ur old flex pipe out and weld a new one on.

Is it a big exhaust leak??
If not then i say don't worry about it.
I has a slight exhaust leak on my rear header and front header area, I might look in to the front header shield.

Although we are different vehicles, mine being a Lexus RX300, we share (at least on the V6 an almost similar 1MZFE engine with minor differences), but I have done my fair share of exhaust work and maintenance of it, just check out page 3 of my Car Domain page to get an idea, http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2215309/3

If there was a leak on my truck, that sucker got welded, modified, you name it. That may give you some ideas.

Looks good.

I am also pleased to hear what a nice difference the pulley made you are the first to run a 1/4 with just that being different.

With this pulley I went from 18.056 to 17.931 in the 1/4 mile.

A few RX300 owners over on Club Lexus participated in a URD group buy back in late 2005 and we picked up the few that we could. I wish there'd been the 3 pulley set (I remember it was talked about on this forum), but nothing ever further became of it.

I haven't had a Solara run at my track, we only have the 2nd gen Solara here in Mexico, and rarely a Toyota of any kind shows up. :( However, if one shows up, they'd be most welcome. :D

Exhausts here can get severely torn up if the gas doesn't get your sensors and cats first, higher in sulfur than U.S. gas, plus the roads are the pits. The gas has a real hard time burning. I know vehicles that are brand new that don't even pass emissions despite the dealer telling the emissions testing center that everything checks out.

One good thing about doing exhaust work down here, can't beat the price.

Thanks Dawgz. I didn't have the drawings for the front pipe on the Gen 1 or Gen 1.5. All I have are the Gen 2 prints.

ok so i do not need to get the whole manifold? all i need to do is get a new flex pipe and have it welded on? and another question....why do i have that ricochey sound whenever i pass cars and stuff, is that also due to the major exhaust leak?

In this thread on CL, I show toward the bottom of the next page and the next few pages, I show the welding of a flex joint I did, http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312304

That richoty sound goes through a narrow vent/break in the exhaust, like a whistle and will cause the sound you hear. Heard it plenty of times myself with work I had to do.
