why does my car keep dying while driving? safe to drive??

well..my mom's NEW solara musta jinxed mine.

I went 1.5miles down the road to do something and it was fine. on the way back, I made it about 1/4mi and suddenly my car started bucking like I was driving a stick and didn't know how (transmission slipping?). The rpms went crazy then shot to 0. My steering cut out and my car didn't even stall..it just stopped. It started no prob and did it 2 more times 1mile up the road.

When I got home I decided to test it. I put it in park and floored it a little, make sure it was getting gas. No prob. Idle...no prob. brought it on a hill..no prob. Turn the ac on...died again. Car starts bucking, rpms go up to 2 and then down low and turns off. It's like the car turns itself to auxilary mode.

I thought it was just the ac, but then I was a block from my house w/out the ac and it died in the middle of the street and wouldn't restart. I finally got it started after 3tries...but I have OT at work from 4-6 and DO NOT wanna take the bus....

Sooooooo

lol...ok, well, I just drove it about 20mins around the neighborhood and I think I've narrowed it down to something to do w/ the fuel filter/fuel injection/type of gas I put in.

our cars wouldn't vapor lock, would they?

This time it was fine except 3times it started to buck like the I didn't know how to drive a stick. then the rmps would shoot to 0, the check engine light (and maybe the other lights in the auxiliary mode, I don't rmember) came on.

the difference w/ before, is this time I kept putting my foot on the gas like it wasn't dead, and the car would stop and act fine. Before I would start to pull over to the side of the road and not gas and it would completely quit.

Sound like the fuel? Maybe someone tampered w/ my car while I was tanning for 15mins. The car was perfectly fine when I put it in the pklt and was dead within 2mins of the parking lot.

Maybe I should go get some alcohol or dry gas at lappens or auto zone and try that??

thats messed!
i doubt its the type of gas youre using though...(but if it is, that'll teach you to cheap out on 'luv')
so are you saying you can prevent it from stalling if you give it some gas when it starts bucking?

seeing that you have been getting really really ratty milage, and nwo random deaths...

it could be something with your timing. Get someone to check if your timing is retarded or something... =\ Sucks to be your Solara -_-

Sounds like you need some roadside assistance. Theres a real cute girl that works in your area, she'll help you.

Its quite obvious something is going wrong with your car. Take it into toyota and start being persistant. Worse case scenario you might have to start looking into the lemon law. Have you had any other problems with the car in the past?

im not joking, but you may need to change your battery. I had got an audi that did the same thing, buckling and dying on the road, rpms going up and down. its definitely your battery, and if not, a bad alternator......

If it is battery, then try to turn on all the accessory (headlight, ac) to see if it effect the running.

I am suspecting you accidently put some disel into your car, or maybe someone put something into your gastank.

good luck

ah im sorry, that blows, cars are never the same after accidents :( same thing happened with our 95 avalon, was near totaled, insurance comapny spent 16,000, yes , 16,000 dollars to repair it, and we fought with them to give us another 3000 for the depreciation of hte car, but it's had so many problems since then, its almost not worth it. best of luck

haha, funny story about that acutally, on teh way to miami for spring break, me and my friends stopped for gas, and he stopped at a pump before lookin at it. turns out it was a diesel pump but he didnt notice. he pulled the nozzle out and tried for literally 10 minutes trying to get the nozzle into the tank, but it wouldnt fit. they purposely make the nozzles for diesel bigger specifically so ppl dont make this mistake. i snapped a couple of pictures so i could make fun of him later

Missay I dont think its your Battery or Alt, and I dont think timing is off, our cars use crank sensors to adjust timing and its done eletronically. Im with Yanks on this one take to the dealer and see whats up.

you know, that whole diesel thing scares me. Saturday I went to a place a normally don't go, it was a no-name full serve and I stopped at a pump and realized it said diesel so I moved up to the next. If the guy put in diesel I could go hunt him down since it was full serve, but considering it was sat and today is wed, I don't think that was it. at least it was only 3 gallons.

Sooo...I was thinking fuel related prob...then I was thinking alternator...now I don't know what to think.

Way to work and home today...NOTHING. couple times I thought it was going to act up and it didn't....hummmm. I'm definitely going to have my mechanic look at it on saturday if it makes it till then. Then if it's warranty stuff I'll bring it to the dealer.

Not all disel fuel gun cannot fit into tank. A friend of my brother got disel in his car and it was estimated $3800 for a new motor. I forgot what exactly happen, but i know the law sue to against the gas station is in process.
