wow! the engine was completely destroyed just from diesel ? i just thought it would be a matter of pumping the diesel out and running some engine cleaner or whatever through the system...3800 bucks is just about what we payed for a whole new engine man

if not the battery, alternator, then its definitely fuel related. You might have some water mixed in with your fuel. Something similar happened to our lawnmower. Albeit our cars arent lawnmowers, but the engine principles are still the same.......As my dad would say.....Take it to da deler.... :)

missay,

darn . . . all the poor luck with your vehicle. If you did accedently use diesel then . . . whammo you car would sieze and not restart. more than likely you got watered down gas. which, by the way saving a penny or two at cheap stations will increase the risk not to mention your history of bad gas mileage.

recommend

having a dealer look at it, your plugs etc.
doubt it's your battery
your alternator could be siezing up sporatically
your plugs may need to be replaced
dry gas may help
buy your gas from Chevron (Techron additive)
if you don't use Chevron add Techron fuel cleaner every 2nd oil change (6k)
don't over do it on drygas or injection cleaner, this will ruin your plugs . . . resulting in rough idle but probably not as serious as your experiencing now.

thanks guys for all your suggestions!!

Strange..car is driving fine now except every now and then it feels like the transmission wants to slip and I almost feel like it's hard to get about 2 rpms on the road.

Oh well, I'm still gonna take it long distance tomorrow for 4th of july. I'm just making sure I have a fully charged cell, some water, and a book in the car just in case I have to call for a tow truck

Could be spark plugs. Be safe driving and I guess its nice to know that you work for AAA.

Perhaps you have a bad coil pack. My old car did the same thing when one went bad. It would die some times, not accelerate sometimes, and other times it would run just fine. You should also check the voltage coming out of your alternator. Good luck.

finally talked to my mechanic. He suggested I try some techron first, I forget what he said now, but something like he thinks the fuel injection..cylinders/headers (?? I have the worst memory) are dirty.

Although, that whole thing that 99solarai4 mentioned sounds exactly like the problem I'm having.

I "attempted" to race a mustang (I knew I'd lose anyways) but I gave up b/c I could accelerate very well...my foot was practically on the floor and I was fighting to hit 4rpms.

hey! i had the exact thing happen to me today! i was pissed off.... i just bought my 99solara 3 weeks ago. it never did that before. it died on me twice. my RPMs would idle up and down, then eventually hit 0 and die on me.
but it feels fine now.
i use 91 octane gas too.... hmmm.... i'm thinking it might be the traction control not pumping enough gas out or something?
i dunno. but Missay, if you find out what it is, make sure to let us know!
i'm gonna get my car checked out too!

Tomorrow I'm going to try the techron...I'll let ya know how it goes!!

Try some Techron and buy one of those $2.99 STP fuel injector and carburator cleaners. Maybe that could help

I highly doubt it gonna work, maybe next time you should record what your mechanic told you. I found most of mechanics just give out lots bullshit to answer your question, because they dont know what happen but they want to sounds professional.

I had discussed this issue with my friend and he suspected it is idle valve leak or A/C vacum leak.

Of course i hope the 10 dollars solution will do the work. good luck

btw.

you need to have a shop to diagnosis the problem. I think it cost 40-80,...they just check timing, compression ratio, air box, A/F ratio and some simple stuffs. but they might able to find answer by that way.

If you can deal with bolts and clips, you can try to exam if anything clogged up on your air intake and filter. Make sure all the pipe are connected tightly. and also check if there are some mystery excessive layer of oil moisture (indication of something vacum leak). while it idle, observe the engine bay and see if you can hear something unnormal such as knocking sounds or whistle sounds (indication of of some vacum leak).

and also, disconnect your battery for 15 minutes, then reconnect it and let it idle for 10 mintues, it might help. Because the computer had reset and learning all the information of the motor

well, my mechanic is actually a family friend that has been working on all our cars for longer than I can remember (when I was little, I used to hide when he came over cause he would pretend to chase me, joking that he was gonna take me home with him :o )

I'm a procrastinator and didn't do the techron thing...opps. so he got my car for me while I was in work and filled the tank, added some techron, ran the computer, tested the ac, etc. etc. (all for $20bucks  )

final verdict:
-ac works great (just smells a little when it first turns on)
-brakes don't work well until car warms up (didn't I just pay $400 last month for whole new brakes??? :-? )
-memory is blank, no problems
-car is "purring like a kitten"

seems to be running fine now..maybe the techron was all it needed
