well my only explanation would be that toyota removed both the DRLs and the auto-on feature between generations 1 and 1.5. bummer for you guys, i really like the way they turn on automatically at night

Light Sensor

Postby msangapu » Tue Jul 15, 2003 8:58 am

I have a 99 Solara and I always wondered what that little ball was on the passenger side dash.

I want to turn off automatic headlights at nighttime.. but if I wanted it back (possibly when selling the car), is it easy to put back?

Has anyone removed the sensor before? Is it difficult? Did you remove the glove compartment first or just wedge it out of there w/ a screwdriver or something? And what wires are connected to it?

I don't want to do a half-butt job removing it especially if I can't connect it back again.

Thanks

You can pull it up w/ ur fingers. All you have to do is unplug the connector, you can tie it up to something or just let it drop down and get it later through the glove box.

Sweet! Thanks. I didn't try it before so I thought it would be hard to remove. You CAN remove it with your fingers! That's cool.
Now onto the DRL...

Thanks! :D

DRL and Solar Sensor

Postby msangapu » Fri Jul 18, 2003 2:30 pm

Okay. Today I'm going to remove the sensor from the dashboard on the passenger side and also unplug the DRL plug.

Now, what are the effects of this?

1) I want the car to never have headlights on during the day or night unless I turn the lights on myself, manually.

Will this be accomplished?

Also, I want the lights to turn off when the car is off, even if the lights are on the "on" position. I hope this will stay the way it is. If not, I might re-think this.. I've gotten so used to turning off the car and exiting so much that I might forget!

Thanks guys for all the help. It's cool to just come up on this board and post simple questions that you don't know the answer to. I appreciate it.

yes and yes, if u remove the solar sensor and the drl, you will have complete control of the head lights, u can turn them on or off anytime, also they will turn off automatically when u turn off the car :)
