will 235/40/18 still fit? or will it rub?

It should fit, but 245 would rub I believe. Check how your speedometer and other stats would be affected http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

the width of the tire should not affect speedometer readings. it is the series of the tire that affects it.

for ie-

205/40/16- will def affect the speedometer
245/65/16- will not affect the speedometer(just make it really odd looking)

the width of the tire should not affect speedometer readings. it is the series of the tire that affects it.

for ie-
stock tire rating is 205/65/16 (for the solara with 16' rollers)
205/40/16- will def affect the speedometer
245/65/16- will not affect the speedometer(just make it really odd looking)

series is related to width though (sidewall height as % of width)
