automatic. tranny problem

ok lately ive been having a problem with my transmission. my friend at the toyota dealer ran a obd 2 test( i think thats what its called) on it and he said it was the E shift silenoid problem...anyways i took it to the dealer they cleaned out the sileniods and then they gave it back and then the enigne check light came back up..then i took it back agian and they ordered new shift assemably and i dunno what that is but yah they installed that. it seemed like it was working fine until yesturday when i found out i have no forth gear. for those who dont know i have a solara automatic with a supercharger... well i found out that i have no forth gear cause i topped out at 120.. and that cant be right cause ive gone faster. but yah i counted from first gear and there was only two shifts and it just stayed in third and redlined..well basicly does anyone know what problem i am having.. its weird cause the engine check light isnt even on.. my friend said that overdrive is off but there is nothign indicating that so i dont know what is going on. if anyone can help i would really appricate it

sorry to hear about ur problems. it basically sounds like overdrive isnt engaging, beacuse overdrive is the fourth gear. normally when you disengage overdrive by pushing that button, you'll hear your engine downshift into third. but im sure u knew that already. my best guess is that its just a simple electronics issue, where ur computer thinks that o/d switch is disengaged, so its tellin the tranny not to go into fourth. i would try pushing the o/d button on your gear shifter a few times, to see if theres any difference when its pressed or not. and see if the o/d off lights up in ur dashboard display. in the meantime, i would recommend not redlining your engine or straining it too much in third gear (or any gear, for that matter) , because the last thing you want is a blown engine. good luck. p.s. i hope ur car is under 60k, so ull still have warranty.

honestly, i know nothing about resetting an ecu and what effects it might have....i kno dealers are a pain, but you need to take it to them, tell them to hop in the car with u, and count the shifts for them, to prove it. take it up to redline if necessary (but dont hold it there too long) to show them that it wont shift out of third. this way theyll have no excuse not to fix it

You don't need to redline the engine to check shifts! Use your tachometer. If you have 4th gear, you should be at 2500 RPM or so at 60 MPH. If you are closer to 3500 RPM, then you are in third.

Exactly! But i think he pretty much knew that wasn't norm...hence his post...

To reset your ecu, disconect your negative from the batter and keep it disconnected for a min 5 minutes and then reconnect n work ur way from there....

Why did it blow? How much mile did you put on it?

Anyways, 4th gear should be around 2100RPM at 60mph

yea i felt the same way for a while. but then one thing you have to realize and accept is that our cars are sporty luxury cars, that are fun to drive. they are not hardcore sports cars. so you really have to decid what you want. personally, i love the way the ride is so smooth, and the car is big, with a backseat ppl can actually sit in. the interior is quiet, and the engines are nice. so for me, that's good enough. i dont think ull ever find a true sports car that rides quieter or smoother than the solara, unless u start paying thousands more for a g35, etc.

true, the solara is a nice car but man the dealership is so trying to screw me over..they just called me an hour ago saying that because i replaced the shift knob that that is the reason that the tranny isnt going into forth. they wanted me to bring down the orignal shift knob. i am so close to trading in my car at some dealership cause i know im gonna get screwed into paying a huge fee thats not gonna be worth it

hey look in the aftermarket upgrades section. theres a sticky about the magnuson-moss act. it basically states that they cant void ur warranty saying that you installed some aftermarket part that was not related to the problem. obviously the shift knob, a DECORATION piece at the top of ur lever can't affect your transmission. print out the thread for them if u want and let them have a look. they cant wiggle out of fixing ur transmission :x

um, i think you're forgetting that the problem is with 4th gear (aka overdrive). the aftermarket shifter many times relocates the overdrive switch. hence, that COULD be the problem. it sounds like the dealer merely wants to have the OEM shifter in order to see if that's what the problem really is.
yikes, always lookin to point the finger at the dealer.

what bugs me more is that there are other dealers out there that are scumbags and give dealers like mine a bad name
