Excessive Belt noise??

Excessive Belt noise??

Postby 99V6solaraSE » Wed Mar 26, 2008 11:18 pm

I dunno if this is normal or not. But took me a while to figure the noises im hearing. Especially since i get some noise from the boost port hitting against the strut bar. But whenever im sitting in place or just rolling and not on the gas, i can hear noise coming from the belt. Dunno maybe its too loose? I have the belt for the 5.5 psi and im running with the tensioner.

^if you haven't put a notch in the strut bar to eliminate that sound, it could just be the belt noise resonating from the strut bar. I remember before I had my strut notched, I could hear the belt a lot more.

the supercharger does make a little noise at idle that sometimes sounds worrisome, but everyone I have talked to seems to think that is normal.

yea itll go away periodically. I guess it also is more espcially noisy with the stiffer dogbone mount and maybe even the torque rod. With the a/c on it shakes more when in drive and at a stop. And also i have the urd crank pulley, not sure how it might play a factor. But once u start driving, the noise goes away and the belt tightens up.

I dont think it cant be too loose since it doenst look like im losing any boost either

heres a clip with my stock box on there.
You can hear the noise from the belt. It doesnt sound bad outside but when you're inside you can hear it too. It kinda bothers me.

here's a question...are you sure that it''s the belt making noise then? unless it's a squeaking noise, you shouldn't be able to hear it through the belt, especially with the dynamic tensioner, which won't transmit noise/vibrations directly through the cabin

if you can hear the noise inside the cabin, it's most likely from your supercharger. the supercharger is supposed to make some noise, but nothing excessive.

take your belt off and rotate the pulley on the supercharger by hand...see if there are any scraping noises when you do that, or clicking noises. only thing is that you won't be able to really hear bearing failure without a load on the bearings (i.e. belt tension + resistance from rotors)

but at least check it out as much as you can

From the inside it does sound like scraping noises and initially i thought it was the supercharger.
But i remember the noises that i used to get when i had a vac leak and the the belt and idle plate used to shake like crazy. And it definitely made a lot more noise because it kept hitting the strut bar. But since i got the vac leaked taken care of, it hasnt been as loud. But i still hear the noise to a lesser extent as im idling or rolling to a stop. With the ac on the car makes more noise as well. I suspected it was the belt cuz i noticed as i rev it up, the belt kinda tightens up and that noise disappears.

and if i remember correctly there was scraping noises when i rotated it by hend when i first got it. I changed the oil using the trd oil change kit before i installed everything.

Im hoping i dont have to rebuild the supercharger.

to confirm, have you tried just taking off the strut bar to see if the noise goes away some?? that'd be the easiest thing to to, really...
