got rear ended

got rear ended

Postby hari-bhari » Sun Aug 03, 2003 1:46 pm

hey, i got rear ended today. basically i had to brake really hard to avoid hittin the guy in front of me, but then the guy behind me hit me. i saw him coming. it wasnt a bad hit, everyoen is ok. he was driving a lexus es300(95-96). the guy who hit me is actually one of my friends, and we were on the way to go paintballing when it happened. i pulled over to look at the damage, and it doesnt look too bad. from what i can tell, the impact cracked the outer layer of paint on the bumper on the lower left side. the crack in the paint is about 8-10 inches long, and u can almost kind of stick ur finger up in there and get under the entire layer. as far as i can tell, the bumper itself is not dented, but ill have to get it looked at by a professional to know for sure. so my question is, assuming the bumper only needs to be repainted, what costs am i looking at? and if the bumper is damaged (which would only be a very minor dent, less than a couple inches across, cuz i cant even see it), would i have to get the bumper replaced, or can the get the dent out? how much would all that cost? basically neither of us wants to report to insurance, and if its not too expensive to fix, he'll just pay me cash. thanks in advance, ill try and get a pic up a little later

awww man that sucks, now our cars dont look identical! lol. From the sound of it you shouldn't have to get a new bumper, just a paintjob. However, it's hard to say without seeing a picture. I can't imagine it costing more than 200 TOPS to have it painted. Sorry to hear!

This happened to me a while ago but it was someone hitting me in the parking lot.. i saw him try to get away but the security guard in the parking lot stoped him.. mine didn't have a dent just a minor paint damage. I took it to toyota and they wanted 350 for reconditioning the bumper and paint. and i made the guy pay me $600. till this day i still haven't fixed it yet.. it was too small to even notice...

I guess that can help you figure out how much it can be.. yours sounds like it would have more damage then mine but im sure a local body shop can do it cheaper then 350 that i was quoted..

I know a contact at a body shop in houston..and i underwent the same in my camry!
If its just refinishing & repainting the rear bumper cover, then 125-200 is a good price (ie. assuming the paint is cracked and webbed)

If its fixing a cracked bumper cover and then having it refinished and repainted...then your looking close to 150-300 for that price.
Just make sure that your trunk lid open and closes well. and that its aligned...when my corolla got rear ended by a motorsycle, the dude screwed up the alignment in the trunklid and it didn't open...thank got it wasn't silver, from what i've read here.they are more prone!

got a pic of what happened:

Image

when i took it to the dealer, they referred me to the body shop down the street. the guy there said that the paint shouldnt be coming off in a layer like that, so someone must have painted it over previously. so he quoted me 6 hours of labor to strip the paint and then extra to repaint the bumper and install it back. grand total: 578.48. so obviously, i was like fudge that, so i made a few phone calls and took it to another place. when i got there, i realized the bumper is actually dented (u cant see it in the picture), and the paint there is webbed out too, which is probably what caused all the cracking that you see. so i asked to guy to give me a quote for just repainting and also one for a whole new bumper (painted and installed). if i just want the current one repainted (theyll still have to strip that whole old layer off since it was a half-assed job), it comes out to 269, and if i want a whole new bumper it comes out to 540. does this sound reasonable?

Painting job sounds alright.

Isn't your friend going to pay for the damage though? Since he rear ended you.

If I were you, I would take off the bumper and see what kind of damage is there. Rear-end accident always have more damage than you can see at first.

yea my friend is going to pay me for the damage. the dent on the bumper is about 1.5 inches across....so i realllly doubt theres any internal damage, but i guess i could ask the guy at the shop to take a look....the only thing that sux is that my friend doesnt have a job right now and he wont be able to pay me back for a month. im gonna try and talk to his parents and see if they can pay me and then he can pay them back. cuz i need all the money i can get for the new ride

Yeah, from the pic, I see that your bumper has been resprayed earlier. If you didn't have a problem with it earlier..you don't need to strip ti down for you to respray/repaint it again! I'd say go for just the respray..but do tell them to REMOVE THE BUMPER FOR THEM TO REPAINT (cus a lot of lazy shops do it with em' being mounted) and sometimes that gives it away when reselling the car! Since the bumper is gonna be out, i'm sure they will advise your accordingly if there is any more damage behind the bumber...Good luck, but the pricing for the respray sounds right!

Did you buy your car new or used? Car dealers have the bumpers resprayed all the time. More frequently with used cars... but it happens with new ones too.
