How hard is it to change struts?

Does anyone here change their own struts/shocks...
I have a creaking noise in the front end (both sides) and a few people have thought it to be the struts. How do you know if that's what the problem is and how hard are they to change? Thanks for any help you can give me.

its hard to tell if that's what the problem is. could be strut tops or strut mounts.
