When you call them, will you say, "Parts Train, TOOT TOOT!"?

Would our cars pass smog with only one cat in states other than Cali?

Dood - you can't be serious with that statement can you???!!! :o

You DO realize that the i4 has ONE HEADER and the V6 has TWO??

Either way, if you're serious about the JPP Header(s) then they come with a Hi-Flow Cat already. If you're going custom then whatever shop you go to will answer that for you.

Please do a little research (like open your hood and count the cylinders/headers)

ouch. harsh. I actually didn't know either. I thought maybe the cat was further down the exhaust, like on most cars. After the headers combined or something, like on my old prelude, the cat was mid-exhaust, which would also explain why in the picture the pipe is pretty straight and not bent much.

I still am not a fan of removing the cat, btw :)

Guys - I'm not trying to be mean, but flabbergasted at the lack of logic I guess... :-?

How many times have you guys looked at the photos of other guys rides under the hood here? Even the name of the different engines should tell you something:

i4 = Inline 4 Cyl - all 4 cylinders line up and there's one header (exhaust manifold) coming off the block in the front (front wheel drive only because the engine is transverse-mounted). This goes down to a straight pipe to the Cat and back. (OEM Manifold goes through a "pre-cat" before the main cat. The headers removes this primary cat and replaces the O2 sensor at this point with an O2 simulator).

Image

V6 = 6 cylinders mounted in a "V" with 3 cylinders on opposing sides - two headers (exhaust manifolds) with one on each side of the bank of 3 cylinders, with one visible in front and one on the rear (front wheel drive). These go down and join in a Y-pipe and then a Cat and back. (OEM Manifolds go through 2 "pre-cats" before the main cat. The headers removes these primary cats and replace the O2 sensors at these points with O2 simulators).

Image

The downpipes from both the front bank and rear bank have to match in length exactly and come together and form a "Y" underneath before going to the Cat.

I knew a V6 had two headers, lol. I'm a mechanic afterall, lol.

What I didn't know is that one every car the cat has to be on the header. Which it desn't, it just happens to be that way on our cars.

Its very possible that the cat is after the headers combine, on a single straight pipe, looking similiar to the photo mentioned above.

Make sense? I would laugh at you, if you didn't know that a V6 had two headers, lol.

I missed this thread because it was gen 2 but let me give you some advice from a person who cannot stop changing his exhaust system.
There are many highflow cats out there I personally prefer magnaflow / carsound but soon I will be testing out a thunderbolt brand OBD2 EPA compliant cat. They cost a little less and are stainless spun cats so hopefully they will work out well.

For the stock Y pipe if you are not replacing it you can buy a 2.5 inch highflow cat and cut the factory one off and replace it with the highflow version. Otherwise you can go the JP route and get the whole header system.

For your catback 2.5 inch piping will be fine for a NA car 3 is too much unless you spend most of your time reving the crap out of the car. As for resonators 18 inch is a good length it will help to keep the sound down when you cruise on the highway. I prefer perforated resonators vs the louvered kind as they flow better but it is my experience that the louvered kind tend to help with the low end a bit more where as perforated are more highend. I think for the best overall mellow sound with no fart cannon sound 2 perforated resonators would be the best choice.

Now for price for stainless 409 series you are looking at about 300-350 for everything you need to build a catback including stainless resonators, stainless hangers and stainless flanges.

For aluminized you could probably get away with about half of that and it would be much easier to weld.
