QUESTION???

Postby Jai_Jai_Binks » Tue Aug 05, 2003 7:58 am

Am going to be doing a 30K service on my solara (i know i can't believe, shes' already 30...i still remember the day i got her home from the dealership..new car smell and all...anyhow back to the topic).....
I talked to two toyota tech's...and they both said differently. I think I agree with one of them.....it is recommended that I replace the ATF fluid, and the differential fluid. Both of them, have their own drain plugs.......However, one of the tech's claimed that they drain the differential fluids and fill them with ATF for the auto 5sfe's. Had it been a M/T then they fill it with differential fluid. I think to agree with him...but i wanted to get your all's opinion before i do ahead and do this service done....Any thoughts (wish flip was still here to show me the light)...
PS: I need to know this before friday, so that i can buy the right stuff for this weekend....also should 4 quarts be enough for this....??? (ie. 4 bottles).

I would get the auto trans fluid changed whenever it's recommended. Auto trans fluid level and condition is very important.

The manual trans fluid is synthetic. I checked it's condition at 100,000 miles and it looks as good as new. It has never been changed and I don't plan on changing it until/unless the clutch needs to be replaced.

I thought Tranny fluid is every 60k?
It does not hurt tho...
I just changed my ATF to Royal Purple and it's awesome. 8)

Change it whenever it's starting to have a burnt smell.

5S-FE's differential is a dead end unit. You will need to drain AND use a suction pump to pump in new fluid from the side of the differential.

For the tranny, if you need to do the whole tranny flush instead of just dropping the pan + changing the ones out of the differential, 4 quarts are far from enough.

I don't have the Haynes manual with me so I can't remember the exact numbers.

Do you happen to have your owner's manual? I believe it says how many quarts you need in both differential and the tranny. (not including flush of course)

I suggest you ask a friend to do it. Even if you buy the ATF yourself (synthetic?), you can never find out if they have put that into your car until it's too late - that is when your ATF starts burning in a year or 2, you'd know the shop didn't put in the synthetic ATF you brought.
