Sway Bars

Sway Bars

Postby hcromeo » Mon Aug 04, 2003 11:41 pm

Since I'm new to the whole upgrading cars and well cars in general (I'm such a newbie), whats up with the sway bars? What do they do? Are they easy to install? Which are the best kind? And how much would they run me?
:-?

The TRD Rear sway bar is the cheapest and easiest way to go. It runs around $150 and it has 2 settings. Try toyotaparts4u.com or search. I don't think as many people do the front.

Great mod. If you are thinking about the front Whiteline does make one. I have the TRD rear and Whiteline front and they are awesome. When cornering, they keep you car from swaying so much. You know when you are making a hard right and the left side of your car feels like it lifts up, these bars will help keep you even. You can check e-bay, sometimes they have some.

Question for those of you who do have added the swaybar...how much does that affect the ride quality? I say, cus' when i went 17' rim's i HATED the ride...i've tried three different tires types...from 205, to 225 and currently on 215's....I know as soon as those tires are worn out, i'm going back to stocks! but how does the bar's affect ride quality....

The ride is a bit stiff and when going around corners it is tight. I like the fact these sway bars try and keep all 4 wheels on the ground. The struts and springs will affect your ride quality. As far as I can tell the sway bars don't affect it much. To me, you don't get the 'riding on cloud' feeling when going around corners. It's been really worth it. Handleing is much better.

the width of the tire has nothing to do with rid comfort. you would have to go to a higher series (ie 215 50 17 instead of 215 45 17)

If you don't like to sacrifice the ride quality for performance, you shouldn't modify it in the first place.

Not to mention, stock is definitely NOT a quality ride. It feels like driving a boat more. There's a difference between comfort and driving a boat.

Sway bar links the left suspension to the right suspension.

When you corner, the inner suspensions have the tendency and the outer suspensions will be pressed down creating body roll. When you have a thicker swaybar, the outer suspension will force the inner suspensions down minimizing bodyroll thus getting more traction to the inner tires.

Ryan is nothing what you all are...or will become! his knowledge will always amaze me...especially since he's like memorized the whole $hit! not to sound like an Ahole :agrue: but i just wanted for someone to comment on the ride quality. In the world of modders, there are those who go for looks, and there are those who go the forced induction route. What suites me, is what suites me....not what i think migh look cool to others. Surely, i've got a kit, surely...i've got wheels..but there's always something lacking in the car in my mind....I agree I need to lower it...but you should drive in Houston roads..to see how NOT to scrape your kit! I don't want to start something by the end of which we would need missay coming and being like the UN or something...bottom line PEACE!

I have no kit on my car. The quality of Vancouver road is as rough as sex without lubrication. Potholes everywhere and repaved roads are worse than the non-repaved ones. Anyways, I still have the car lowered on Eibach with Bilstein, it still won't scrape anything since it's not a dramatic drop.

In stock form, you basically won't know what the road surface is like because you won't feel a thing from the steering wheel. I enjoy driving because of the feedback it gives me. I know how fast to take a turn using this feedback.

I have the TRD rear sway bar on TRACK setting, and the Whiteline front sway bar. I also have Eibach springs and Tokico struts. My ride is a lot firmer than stock, but I wouldn't go back to the boatlike stock ride for anything. The sway bars make the ride a bit firmer in the front, but it's mostly noticeable when only one of the front wheels hits a bump. Since the streets where I live are pretty horrible, I've stuck with a 16" wheel, although I use 225/55 tires with a 7 1/2" wide wheel. They don't look quite as good as 17's, but they give me a little more comfort on potholed streets.
