(i know cus even my celica is 5sfe) as much as i like that engine...it was designed to be RELIABLE. Unless you have rough rough rpm jumps, then you might have problem with your ideling (sp??).

yea its not very rough at all, very mild, and the RPM wavering is minimal, u only notice if u stare at it, its less than a millimeter up and down. as far as sludging, i do have a letter from toyota saying that sludging is an issue (but not as serious as 1mz-fe engine). i have gotten the oil changed regularly since ive had the car, but when my parents had it they let it go 7k wihtout changing  so i think just to be safe ill take it to the dealer and see what it looks like. also, i guess if the fuel filter is dirty, it could affect the fuel flowing and cause my rpms to waver a bit right? i hear so many different things that i dont know whether to get the filter changed at 60k or 100k. i may jsut get a whole fuel induction service done, but i dont want to put money in the car and then sell it :-? oh and can the pcv valve affect any of this, since i still have to change mine out..

Bad motor mounts will make it shake at idle.

Hmmm seems possible. But he has an i4, I dont think 4 cylinders can make the mounts wear out that quick. Ive heard motor mounts having to be replaced on cars after 100k miles.

I've got very slight vibee's on my i4 too...Hari...what other cars are in your family...maybe your comparing you car to them...cus' i know even my 100K mile ES has lesser vibe's than my newer solara (under 30K miles).

There are many things that can make a car shake at idle, I was just pointing out one of them. Good Luck

well thanks for all the tips, its not really that huge of a deal, it was more just my curiousity of what could cause it, but the more i think about it, the more it just seems like a normal thing. and the surprising thing is, after i ran my a/c all day today (i usually dont use it more than once a month), the vibration from the a/c seemed to lessen. i guess it was rough before because i used it so little and there might have been some buildup from whatever, but after running all day, it seems a lot smoother. on a sidenote, anyone notice that the shifts are much smoother when the a/c is on? i guess because the rpms cant climb as fast and the tranny has more time to match the engine speed or something, who knows.

Did you ever find out what the problem was? This has happened to me while on vacation in FL. It even died on me twice, both shortly after starting it up in the AM, and that was after I took it to Toyota fo a 45k check up! I took it back and they cleaned the throttle, but that didn't fix it. I think it was bad gas. I usually get it from the base, but I decided to go with Amoco and the prob went away. It's happening to me again, so I'll have to look into it before driving from NJ to TX.

well i never had the engine actually shut down on me. it was more that the car's idle wasnt as smooth as it used to be. but i guess as times goes on, the motor mounts get more worn out and what-not, so it will never be as smooth

When I first turn my car in the morning (idling) the engine starts shaking a lot (like it's chocking). Then it shuts off. I think now that you mentioned it, that it was bad gas too? It did this for a couple days. I'm going to see if it happens again tomorrow, here is my thread on this problem:

idle rumble

Postby Solaraman » Fri Nov 14, 2003 6:25 pm

Hey I have the exact same problem with "idle rumble". I noticed that after 25,000 miles on my 2000 Solara 4cyl. It also seems to go away with longer driving. I'm up for changing my air filter with all the bad air here in S. California from the fires, so I'm assuming it's from that. I hope it's something simple. When I'm at a red light I shift the car into neutral and that makes the rumble go away making it sound like it once used to. I asked a Toyota mechanic and he had no idea what I was talking about. He said the 2000 6cyl. are known for having idle problems to the point where they stall but he never heard of this idle problem.

COME ON, OUR CARS ARE TRYING TO TELL US SOMETHING!!!

Ok. I added Valvoline gasoline cleaner
http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products ... product=25. It didn't completely abolish the problem but the car definately sounds better.
