Seatbelt flapping in the convertible

Seatbelt flapping in the convertible

Postby jduffus » Mon Aug 04, 2008 1:57 pm

Hello everybody.

The rear right side seatbelt in my 2004 convertible flaps at highway speed when the top is down. Has anyone seen a good add-on belt holder that would keep it from flapping? I'm thinking there should be something like a tiny stretch cord that would attach to the interior wall with glue with a flat retaining clip you can attach to the inboard side of the seatbelt to hold it still against the wind.

Anything like that out there that you know of?

Thanks.

Yeah that sucks. Mine does it too when I don't have the windscreen installed.

I've just stuffed it into the crack of the seat back before - helps temporarily. Bad design Toyota!

The day I bought it 4 years ago, I tucked the rear belts into the side of the seat. Haven't had to do it again. They'll stay if you tuck it top to bottom.

Now if you actually put bodies back there frequently, then maybe you need some jury rig.

Yikes! So you have to take down your screen every time?

LOL MikeCain!

You don 't have a windscreen do you? It only takes a few seconds to pop it out and toss it in the trunk. ;)

One word--Velcro. Pick up a color that matches your seats if you can (I know it comes in black, tan and white). Use about an inch (might not even need that much) somewhere near the center of the belt and on your seat. You might have to experiment a little so take the Velcro with you along with some scissors while you drive at highway speeds.

If there's no flutter you're done. If there is you might try moving the piece of Velcro up or down a little for fine tuning. When you've found the 'sweet spot' match the installation on the other side of the car.

Done properly you won't have any issues with passengers (the Velcro will release easily when the belts are needed) and if the placement is done carefully the Velcro will automatically find its 'other' half when the belt retracts. It'll also be invisible, hidden by the belt.

The only 'problem' I foresee is the possibility of passengers clothing getting caught by the Velcro so think about that when choosing where to place the stuff and which side (hook or fluffy) goes on the belt and which on the seat (think I'd put the fluffy on the belt side.

Cheers

Everyone makes fun of me because when I clean the interior I always buckle all the seats except the drivers and keep them buckled untill I know Ill have passengers. I don't know why I do it but its a quick solution.

I agree with Pogs. Although I have a coupe I still buckle up the rear seat belts. That way I know where they are and they are ready to go.
