Coolant: Red or Green?

Coolant: Red or Green?

How come everyone says to use Red coolant, and not Green coolant? I have 32k right now, and I changed my coolant at 30k. I know that it came with red, but I put green in. Will my car be ok?

why'd you use green? is it cheaper? 1 gallon of the red coolant is $14 at the Toyota dealership. I bought it 2 weeks ago and I flushed my radiator myself. The sales person at the parts/service department says red is better to use for our Toyotas, he didnt go into detail about it. I know green is the most commonly used, why is that? Anyone know the difference between the two?

Did you mix the green along with the red? Or did you flush out the red and then put in the green?

Red coolant has no Silicone in it, green has silicone in it and it will slowly start to eat the insides of our cooling systems. I highly recommend using the Red, especially if you want your warranty to pay for some thing that went wrong with the cooling system.

I flushed out the red, and then put the green coolant in. I found that people also prefer the red coolant at lexus forums: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/in ... =7&t=1177&

They said that mixing green and red is a bad idea because it will create sludge. So hopefully I did a good flush  I guess I'll just have to see what happens with the green.

Is it necessary to fill the overflow tank with coolant?

I hate to say it but you're pretty dumb for using green coolant. Also NEVER EVER mix coolant. Do not overfill either, there is a line that you should not exceed.

These are the times i miss flipside

Its true. There is no reason to use the green stuff. Any toyota dealer will tell you to use red. Also the owners manual makes a point of it. If our cars were designed to run on the red, why would you put in the green.

Its also part of the n00b hazing

When I went to my dealership, the customer service guy told me the toyota red coolant doesnt corrode like the green coolant. Like yanks said even if you do switch the green, ensure that you completely flush out the red, then put in the green (I wouldnt recommend since toyota uses it).

even if the green is a couple bucks cheaper, in the long run, using the red, you wont have to worry about your coolant as much as the green

just my 2 cents

Whats with the noobie hazing?? :agrue:

Red coolant at the dealership is for 9 bucks and some loose change (i think for the month of august)..I just bought three (since i have 3 cars to flush). Its savings of some loose change. generally, you don't have to flush that often...keeps your car running like its supposed to....keeps radiator corotion down! When i flush, i mix 60-40 for the water/coolant. If it needs more mix in the radiator a few weeks down the road...then i use straight water in the rediotor...and straight coolant in the resivor! (yeah, you got to flush the resivor as well, cus' then your mixin' the red and green!)

scarff up a little for small cleansing, instead of bending over and the dealer behind you when your radiator corrodes.
