Fuel pump upgrade?

Fuel pump upgrade?

Postby Turbosolara » Wed Aug 27, 2003 2:12 pm

I am wondering what kind fuel pump do you guys use? If you use the 255 fuel pump, have you ever had overflow or burned fuse problelm? I am not sure if i should get the 190 high flow pump or 255 nonturbo supra pump.

I have upgraded 310cc injectors with boost depend fuel pressure regulator

I bought my fuel pump from a company in S.Cal. It's call E.L.Prototypes, The guys name is eric, if I remember right, You'll have to ask them about the rating because I dont know, It was about 300.00 after the core charge.
But It dropped right in, they upgrade something in the stock pump and sell you that, that way you don't have to worrie about trying to make it fit.

What kind of improvements will these upgraded fuel pumps do exactly? Just curious

cheft: sounds like you have got a supra OEM fuel pump in your solara

To change the fuel pump will make it deliver more fuel to achieve better A/F ratio

here is two good site about this issue

Is that what E.L proto said? thats cool.
Ya, my Air fuel was running really rich after i put the pumping with a six pound pulley. i thought it was a rip off, The car sucks gas like no tomarrow.

I don't understand how installing a smaller pulley could make the car run too rich (unless I have the terminology reversed). The purpose of a SuperCharger is to increase air pressure and density in the intake manifold (we used to call them blowers in the old days 8) ). Putting a smaller pulley on, creating more pressure should force more air and make the car run leaner. I thought lean/rich referred to the amount of fuel in the air/fuel mixture. Lean being too little fuel and rich being too much fuel.

Then the problem would be that since you are increasing the volume of air, there is the potential that your fuel injectors were not able to supply the volume of fuel to allow for the correct mixture or possibly that the injectors were ok but the fuel pump could not supply the volume to the injectors. The computer calibrated for stock will be telling the fuel system it needs less fuel than we require with superchargers running smaller pulleys so we use the APEXi S-AFCii to recalibrate the mixture.

Should be as simple as this; you put a smaller pulley on and S-AFC, try to dyno tune the car to give the propper air/fuel mixture. If you can't get enough fuel to allow the correct mixture, you need to upgrade the injectors and/or the fuel pump. Guessing the injectors should be the first choice and if they still can't provide enough fuel, then the fuel pump.

I could have this all screwed up, I'm still learning. Anyone that really knows validate or correct. Has anyone done this testing with a 6psi pulley installed? I've heard some say stock fuel pump and injectors with 6psi and S-AFC dyno tuned worked fine. Then others say they couldn't get the correct air/fuel mixture. HELP??? -JoeB

Well JoeB,
You are right
Should be as simple as this; you put a smaller pulley on and S-AFC, try to dyno tune the car to give the propper air/fuel mixture. If you can't get enough fuel to allow the correct mixture, you need to upgrade the injectors and/or the fuel pump. Guessing the injectors should be the first choice and if they still can't provide enough fuel, then the fuel pump.

But alot of people are just going for the injectors upgrade rather than the fuel pump, I did the fuel pump rather than the injectors, and I have no problems at all. Although I have not checked my fuel pressure yet.

chef, thanks for the reply. So from your experience, it sounds like upgrading the fuel pump allowed you to achieve the proper air/fuel ratio. So, we can assume that the stock injectors are capable of delivering enough fuel, great to know. Did you HAVE to upgrade the fuel pump? Did you put in a smaller pulley and have trouble delivering enough fuel to get the proper air/fuel ratio? Or did you just decide to upgrade the fuel pump anyway?

Thanks a lot for the feedback! This is the great thing about this forum, being able to learn from guys that have the first hand experience. Thanks ultramookie! -JoeB

You can just drop in injectors from the N/A 1jz engine

Yanks, Guest or somebody help me out. Why do you want to upgrade your injectors or fuel pump? The trick is to get more air in. Of course that is only good as long as you can supply enough fuel to keep the propper air:fuel ratio. So if our stock pump and injectors can be adjusted through dyno-tuning to provide the right mixture, why would you upgrade components in the fuel system? -JoeB

If you upgrade your fuel injectors, you need to change your fuel pump to keep up the fuel pressure. please read the link i posted for example.

I understand both of your points but as I said, if you are able to get the correct air:fuel mixture while dyno tuning the car, then this shouldn't be needed. If you have problems with knocking, that means you are running too lean and need more fuel delivery. I thought that might be the case because of all the people talking about blowing knock sensors but haven't been able to confirm it. Then it is just a question of the volume ratings of the injectors and fuel pump as to which one or both that need to be replaced/upgraded.

I was trying to find out if someone with a supercharger and 6psi pulley was having problems with their injectors and/or fuel pump maintaining the adequate fuel delivery. Like you said TRDMole, you can always just do these upgrades for safety to make sure you get adequate fuel delivery but if you don't need more fuel than the stock setup, it is a waste of money. Anyone tested it? -JoeB
