For some reason my car chooses not to start at random. Heat or cold have nothing to do with it. It does it when it's even been warmed up sometimes. When I turn the key the car almost starts, then just dies. But when I push the accelerator while doing this, the engine revs up and starts. It feels like a fuel problem. Any ideas or help, would be greatly appriciated. Thanks for your help.

I doubt it's the starter, because it does turn over. I think it might be fuel related, because you have to press the pedal, to make it start, then you can let go of the accelerator once it has started.

Auto or manual?

Older manual cars used to require you to depress the gas pedal a few times so the engine has enough fuel to start, but modern engines wouldn't need this. It probably has something to do w/ the injectors.

Does it idle normally? Or is it acting up during that also ?

4-speed Automatic

Postby guest » Mon Sep 08, 2003 12:40 pm

It's a 4-speed automatic. I had the injectors cleaned out last year. Maybe the fuel filter needs to be replaced. The car only has 50k miles though. Anyways, this problem only happens one in 10 starts. And the other 90 percent of the time, the cars starts very fast and has no problems at all, which leads me to believe that the starter is in perfect condition. The battery is fine also, because everything works fine. It's just that sometimes, I have to press the accelerator to start the car. Thanks for all the usefull tips, I'll try getting to fuel filter replaced and see if that works.
