Your original post related the 8" as rear fill if you wire out-of-phase. Out-of-phase subs do NOT perform on different frequencies, it's just time shifted. So basically, what you are suggesting is that the 12" play regularly, then, phase shift the 8" so there will never be a dead point at a wavelength node, but just the amplitude would be smaller. That would be droning out the bass, not fill.
The surface area of two 6x9's will have similar effects as an 8", thus they are sufficient for rear fill, but won't have the deep extension of a bass driver. If you want just to have bass notes between the beats of a 12", IMO, the 6x9s will suffice.
