Steering Fluid

Steering Fluid

Postby Hsakuragi » Sun Aug 31, 2003 6:09 pm

I'm boring so I'm reading the solara manual, on the Steering section, it said

POWER STEETING FLUID TYPE:

Automatic transmission fluid Dexron II or III...

Is that a mistake or wat?

I'm using Valvoline Synethinc Blend Power steering, is it ok or what?

Also, for the transmission, I know the v6 use 5.0qt of fluids, does this include the oil in the torque converter?

I'm trying to use a pump to pump all the fluids out, it's easier than get under the car and drain the fluids out. I did on oil change with the pumps, and it did sucked out almost 5 qts of oil (there are marked level on the bottle..) 8)

you used a pump for the motor oil? i think it's just easier to do it the old fashioned way. anywho... about the tranny fluid. since your tapping into the torque convertor area, why dont you make sure you put in as much as much as you took out?

if you were to service the tranny by unplugging the plug at the tranny pan, i think only 3 qrts comes out.

Not at all. That's the correct fluid for Toyota Power Steering Units.

I have a 2000slev6 Solara, and the power steering fluid that it came with from the factory was NOT auto trans fluid. I recently flushed the system using Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid.

I would NOT suggest you use a pump to change your oil. You will not get all the junk in the bottom of the oil pan. Get you oil hot and remove the oil drain plug to drain, remove filler cap while draining.

The automatic transmission pan holds 5 quarts, but I think the total capacity is around 12 quarts. I recently flushed the transmission fluid by disconnecting the return line from the OEM cooler incorporated in the radiator and connecting a clear line and inserting into a graduated waste bucket. Get fluid hot first before disconnecting and while car is running, add fluid to transmission at the same rate as it is going into the waste bucket. Use a clear line and when it is running a nice red you are done.
I found that the transmission had a flow rate of 1 quart every 20 seconds.

Power steering fluid

I have been told that Toyota uses a non red dyed Dexron III fluid for their power steering fluid.
I would recommend the use of a Dexron III fluid, mineral or synthetic.
