5SFE myth

5SFE myth

My friend's bro is working at toyota dealer as a mechanic and he also has a 700hp supra. I just have him to changed my timing belt and 60k maintenace. He told me something about 5sfe, 97-01

1. It make lots noise, its normal
2. The valve cover gasket leaks oil at about 30k miles (you can check if you have leak oil problem from check the engine's back side and oil pan. if they are wet, then they are leaking). Not a major problem but it just lost oil faster and burns make smell. and dirt your chasis
3. It has to use facotry red coolant. Because the coolant has lubricant inside and it will help prolong the water pump life. The standard life of water pump is about 80000 miles with red coolants.
4. If the timing belt broken, although the enigne is non-interference, it still can cause damage on the motor. The damage will maxmize as the intake valve is open all the way and the postion is the high position. I forgot what happen exactly

btw, can you 5sfe people told me what's your rpm when you drive 80mph? he told me my speedomter is off..

5sfe's making noice is nomal since the old celica days. These babies are smooth...but not lexus smooth! I know what you mean....The valve cover gasket is NOTHING NEW! Its a common 5s thingie...just keep a check on the services...and replace seals at 100K or when need be...or else they will leak if you use thinner oil. With that said..i know a lot of friends with over 300K on their original 5s motors. So overall i'm confident that when it comes time to say good buy...she will be better than the competition for the same year.

In my Solara it's almost 3k exactly. In my parents Camry it's a tiny bit lower. By the way parents traded in a Gen 3 Camry w/ 250k+ on their 2000. It's not a myth that a properly serviced 5S will out last most any motor on the road :).
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

80 mph --> just under 3K rpm (about 2900 may be). No leaks so far for the first 75K miles ... Plan to change my timing belt on schedule at around 90K and leave the pumps alone till they break (you may be in erlier 'cause of the turbo though).

I'm at 2900 as well....I was on cruise at 80 for a good 20 minutes...overall averagely it was at 2900-2800...but when going down hill...the rpm's do lower..and obvioulsy...when going up hill they raise to speed up to catch up to 80...i tried with and without the a/c..and there was hardly any difference (i see the difference at stoplights, etc..but didn't notice when cruising at 80). In case your wondeirng, i've got close to 30K miles on my 01 5s motor! Hope this helps....
