Hood venting mesh MOD*update!

Updated on last page
Here is my attempt at making a mesh hood vent. I will be making another cut of the same exact shape on the left side tomorrow, I ran out of time today. You can see the edge of my filter through the mesh in the third pic, and I can hear the engine A LOT more. I would imagine it is pulling colder air into the intake as well. I will make a tutorial tomorrow night when I do the other side. The funny part was, when I had to go to Lowe's to get more cut off wheels for my Dremel, I didn't have a hood, and ppl were giving me some crazy looks, and lots of "double takes". The engine sounded really nice with no hood, and I swear when I got there, I could touch the exhaust manifold for a few secs before it started to burn my hand. Thoughts, suggestions?

I wish It would snow here, The most snowfall I have ever seen in my entire life was 3 inch's of snow a couple years back. As far as rain, I took the piece that I cut out, and trimmed it down about 1/4 of an inch, and if it ever starts POURING rain, I'll just slide it behind the mesh. Hardly any water can get In, I tried pouring water over the hole with that piece of metal in, and none got through. Oh yeah the cool part: when I'm at a red light, I can see heat waves (like you see on the roof of a hot building or over a fire) coming out of the vent. So AWESOME.

It was really easy to do, I just removed the hood, removed the hood insulation, and traced out a pattern on a piece of paper, then cut along it on the underside of my hood with my Dremel. Make sure you cut the edges as straight as possible, I'm going to have to do some grinding on that bottom edge to make it more straight. I bought some u-channel (door edge protector) from Autozone, and after filing off the barbs from where I just cut, I placed it around the entire hole, then I cut out a piece of mesh about 1 inch bigger around than the hole in the hood, and painted it flat black. Once it was dry, I attached it to the underside of the hood using Double sided tape. . Now its a functioning hood vent/ intake opening. I placed my cut just over the filter so it pulls cold air from outside the engine bay. I'm going to make a metal box for the intake and when the hood is closed, the only place the filter can pull air is from that hole. I'll write a tutorial with Pics tomorrow. :)

No way man, winter sucks. It may seem like a novelty, but I own a second beater car just so my solara doesn't get trashed. I would give anything to never see snow a day again in my life.

Looks good, hope it helps you keep your temps down, and make a little bit more powr.

Not sure about more power, But I know it keeps the engine bay cooler. I plan on measuring it using a scanner tool.

I like it

I would however, run some drainage for the airbox you intend on making, so you don't take any water into your intake.

I'm running a CAE, so this wouldn't be necessary, although.... Hmmm... I wonder if this would bring the engine temps down.
