clanking noise

clanking noise

Postby kondo » Fri Jun 27, 2003 6:58 pm

I took my car to get a new tire put on it today and after I got my car back it started making a clunking noise from the back end. I took it back to the place that lowered it and they told me that when the car got jacked up the springs came off of the top of the strut. They said that if I jacked the car back up and realigned the spring that it would fix the noise. So I took the car back to the tire place and they tried to do that but the noise has not gone away. Has anyone else had simmilar issues with lowering springs. I have tein s setch springs and tokico blues. I am taking the car back to the place that installed the struts and springs on tuesday to get it fixed but for now i am driving my moms highlander.

Check and make sure the rear strut is bolted on correctly... i had that noise a while back even tho my car isn't lowered yet..

The dealer said that the strut was not mounted correctly so it made the noise..It was making the same clanging noise your talking about...

Im lowering my car this Monday so i hope i don't get that same noise when i get my springs and struts installed...

Trd/Eibach and Tokico combo...

Hey, I am having the same problem right now. It happened before and it fixed itself after a week or so...

I think I know how it happened: I have the TRD RSB in the back and I have to go up an uneven pathway to back into my garage... When the left rear wheel is pressed, the rear right wheel will be in the air because the RSB prevents it from dropping down. As I back up more, the right rear wheel drops back on the ground and I hear this weird noise. When I drive afterward, I have this metal clanking sound. Personally, I think it's no big deal. I already took the wheel out to examine and tighten everything and everything couldn't be tightened anymore. I guess I will check out the spring tomorrow and see.

took my car in today and got the noise fixed. It turns out that when the tire place put my car on the lift they screwed up my RSB and that is what was causing the noise. The sway bar was way off center so they corrected it and now my car is as good as new. the best part is that it did not cost me anything. So anyone with a RSB should be carfull when they have anyone work on their car.

i'm REVIVING THIS THREAD!!!!

i don't have a RSB, but i too am getting this clanking noise. it sounds like the rear struts are not bolted tightly, but i just tore apart the back of my interior and the top strut bolts were already tight enough.

anyone else have any problems after lowering?

perhaps your strut mounts are bad.

You sure you don't have a RSB?

Even stock RSB can make that sound... Anyways the problem of mine was... The bolt between endlink and the swaybar went loose, the threads got f00ked up bad and I ended up drilling the endlink out with some High Speed Steel drill bits (drilling for 1 hour) and replace it with a new endlink... (damn thing is like 100 CDN with discount already)

I hope you can still get the endlink out.

Anyways, good luck!

i'm guessing the endlink can only be accessed after you remove the wheel huh? sh!t, that sucks. it's weird b/c when i have my car parked i shake my car real violently, and i hear nothing! but as soon as i get into it and go over the smallest little bump, i can hear something knockin'...

yup you have to jack the car up and put the complete rear end on jack stands. You can't just jack up one side

Then you have to jack up the rotor (the stud) to see if the endlink is loose, you can't you check after you take the wheel off.

If you think that is bad, all four corners of my car rattle from the suspension. Either the quality of the Solara or the parts just aren't up to par. The rattle is calm until I hit over 40 mph, but in the morning when it's cool out, or if the car hasn't been running for a few hours there will be real loud clanking sounds. So far it's been looked at, tightened, and had new camber plates, and nothing has even phased the noise.

i have this problem and its worse than all of you...its ground control coil overs and tokico shocks. it makes metal clanking noise on all 4 sides of my springs. i still can't find the problem, everytime i make a turn it goes "dong dong dong" popping noises from the coil overs . and i don't want to take it to the dealership where they can overcharge me for every little thing. i've been told its not a big deal but, that noise is killing me, makes me feel like the car is breaking down or something. does anyone have a solution?
