NEW YORK PEOPLE! HELP!

I'm looking at the laws online for window tinting, and according to everything I read, for New York, you windows can only have 70% tint on the front and rear windows? Is this right? Thats absolutly retarded (not to offend anyone) but it is! Tell me this is wrong! I've heard that in NY, you can have like 20%. Anyone from NY with tints, tell me what you have and if you've gotten any crap for it....thanks.

I lived in Newark, NJ and worked @ 3E 54th st. for almost one year. Got 5% with 20% underneath on side and rear. 15% in the front. Cops never said anything. Were in New York are you talking about? Cause NYC is to busy to pull people over for dark tinted windows. It depends on were you live. Suburbs? Inner-city? Upstate? Got to go watch game 5 now. In life you take risks to get what you want. :multi:

Duh I just saw that your location is LongIsland!! Sorry bout that. Yeah you might have a problem with cops there. As long as you don't do anything crazy with your car on the road hopefuly you won't have a problem. NY is full of crazy laws but 70% is alittle to much. Maybe they are saying no more than 70% can be darkend. Meaning. 30% is the max tint you can get.

yeah, I dunno. According to the law that I read, it said that like 70% of light must pass through the glass. I'm guessing that means 70% tints.

the law is that 70% of the light must go through, so that means you can only have 30% tint. it's something that they'll really bust you for it if you're obnoxious, or if you have something rediculous like 100% tint. :drinking:

The lower the number, the darker the tint, right? According to you, if 70% of the light can go through, then it's a 30% tint. So if no light can go through, it's a 100% tint? I thought like somethign really dark would be like 5%...?

The lower the number, the less light. I have 5%, so 5% light gets in.

Yes. That makes sense now. I am sure he was trying to say 100% tints as in 0% light passing though. 5% is aka limo-tint. I don't think you can get darker then that unless you start to add more layers. Cops have this contraption that they put up to your window and can check your tint rating. At least if you keep it higher in the door windows. It won't draw their attention. It would be better referring the tints with the lower number instead of the higher so at least people comprehend the darkness right away. It depends on how you say it.

I have been pulled over in NYC for dark tint. Nothing the pba cards couldn't handle. They have a nifty scanner to measure the light going thru the tint. You can call Jay over at Precision Tinting. He knows all the laws. 631.499.6384 Very cool dude The law applies to the drivers window mainly and the back can be darker.

I can appreciate that you want to be a law abiding citizen. But do you think they'll actually give you grief over your tint? It would seem to me (though I don't live there) the police would have more important issues on their minds. I've got 20% tint on all windows which is illegal in Wisconsin (50% is the most). I'm not worried about being pulled over for it. Now, if I get pulled over for speeding and the cop asks about the tint, then I'm screwed!

You don't understand fotodad, the cops here in Nassau County DON'T have anything better to do. When there is anything minor that happens (IE a few of us hanging out in a park near a house and being kinda loud) about 4-6 cars show up. I should look into being a NC cop, they are the highest paid police force in the country and no offense if anyone is a NC cop, but you don't have much to do compared to most suburban areas.

MGLax13,
The situation you describe is so unfortunate. I have the ultimate respect for police and the dangerous job they are asked to do each day, but a certain amount of common sense and understanding must accompany their job when dealing with the public they protect. Officers who look for small issues to make big deals about have little respect from me.

But on the other hand. If your tint is excessive and because of your dark tint you don't see the mom walking across the street with her baby and you hit them, then I stand corrected. I guess it's all in whose shoes you are standing in.

Good luck with your decision.
