question about replacing a rear bearing

question about replacing a rear bearing

Postby beanslicer » Thu Jan 21, 2010 12:47 pm

hey guys, so my rear bearing is squeaking and making a humming noise at higer speeds, so i ordered a new one to replace it, since its a whole assembly i figured it shouldnt be too crazy to replace, but the local mechanic quoted me with 1.5 hours labor, normally that wouldnt be a big deal, but i am a poor college student, and since i am pretty handy, i think i can change it myself.
anyway, i just just wondering if anyone has ever done it before and knows how to, or maybe can even post a tutorial.
this is with the ABS
http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/BN/ ... oogle+Base
second one on that page (rear right)
any help would be greatly appreciated

I would suggest you have a new o-ring if the one you ordered didn't come with one.

It is very simple to replace that whole piece...

Take the wheel off
Take the caliper off
Take the rotor off
Reach in with a 14mm socket on a 6" extension to the back 4 bolts. You might have to push the e-brake parts out of the way using the socket to get it over the bolts.

Assembly is the same in reserve. Hub bolts get torqued to 59ft/lbs. Remember to replace the oring that is against the backing plate with a new one.

You can get them at a dealership. A pair of them (one for each side) shouldn't be more than $8-10 even marked up.

Hey beanslicer,

What company did you go with for the bearing? Where did you buy it?
I think I'm going with the Timken unit from Autozone. Good luck to you too.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

i went with the one here: http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2000/t ... embly.html
the one for 75 bucks, its only takin them 3 buisness days to deliver which i think is good, and my mechanic said that even a cheaper bearing should last me 50k miles, so i figured there is no real reason to opt out for the one thats $150 more.
i just *bought* a torque wrench from sears and my friend should be avail to help me out by thurs, so hopefully ill do this thing before i drive to PA 150 miles each way for a snowboarding day haha.
btw, my name is lex (and i just posted a picture in the post a picture discussion), whats your guys names?

Lex,

I'm Ben, I think you're probably right about the price difference. I hope the stuff you get works as long as you need it to. I think I'll go with Timken just to be safe, I plan on having the car for a really long time. I posted a picture of me in the pic thread too. I'm under the Green Giant. :D
