Just put on my greddy evo, still think its too loud

Postby GreeKAvaLoN » Sun Aug 22, 2010 1:05 am

Soo, I just put on my greddy evo that i had on my avalon, and yes it fit, BUT the o2 bung is on the wrong side so i flipped the midpipe over (or upside if u may) to fit the o2 bung and now it fits, but the bend is touching the head shield thats against my floorboard (or gas tank idr) i like the sound between idle and like 2500 but after that its WAY too raspy and loud for my taste on an avalon. So my question is, what kind of resonator do you guys think would go good to help quiet down the sound and high rpm rasp but keep the low grumble tone? I'm thinking about taking the midpipe to a muffler shop out here that does good reputable work and having them reweld a diff o2 bung and maybe this resonator http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vibrant-2-5-Ultra-Quiet-Resonator-Lancer-Evolution-EVO-/120582356193?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories, unless u guys can think of a quieter one? Oh, and i'm also running full jpp headers, y-pipe and jpp highflow cat, and soon a LOT more stuff (hopefully latest end of sept be done with my 3mz)

get a sound clip!

I've always wanted to hear greddy exhaust and upgraded header/y pipe.

does the stock avalon have dual muffler setup? i think that would be interesting... modded header/y with stock muffler.

I thought the greddy had 2 resonators factory installed. On mine I cut down on rasp by installing 2 silverline stainless perforated resonators.

idk, on my greddy evo1 i only have 1 resonator that when i look through the midpipe i can see straight through lol. I'm not gonna lie, when it comes to exhausts im a complete noob. I'll work on getting a sound clip in a bit just for you mole!

My bad you have an evo 1 the evo 2 has dual resonators.

Sounds like you have a perforated resonator vs a louvered resonator (see pic below)

Find the pipe size I think it is 2.36 so you will need a 2.5 inch resonator. Then have it welded in, it may be a bit big but it can be done. Louvered gives more sound deadening and less flow but not by much. I would suggest picking a short <22 inch resonator made from stainless on ebay and have it welded in. Remember a smaller outside diameter and length will make it easier to fit. Then get a O2 bung off ebay and weld that in and plug the current bung with a M18 screw.

I used 2 18 inch resonators in my design and it worked great check out the link

im working on getting a better "free rev" video, i took it but may need to put it on youtube

I talked to the exhaust shop and he said he can re weld an o2 bung, an 18in resonator for 100 bucks.i'll probably do that by the end of this week or next week.

Crazy what a difference the JPP setup makes to the overall tone. My EVO 1 is actually pretty damn quiet, the Injen/UPFD intake setup is actually louder than the exhaust at any given time!

w.e man i got the exhaust done on my parents car (my future car) and its pretty deep and loud, but its discrete my mother hasn't noticed yet, since its a deep throaty tone at idle, but she's never out of the car when it idles and she never pass's 3500rpm and thats when it starts to get loud lol and its a full size sedan! 2000 chrysler LHS with 3.5L also went from 250 to 261hp and 250 tq to 255tq, on my camry ive got a custom 2.25 from cat back with 2 resonators and a high flow cat and its not as loud as the lhs. but sounds mean!

edit: after listening to the video it is a little tiny sounding at revving, dont know why, mine doesnt sound like that at all, mines deeper kinda like at the end is what mine sounds like constantly, but then again i dont have headers, just a new oem y pipe

Sounds almost like my Greddy Evo exhaust.
I'm on OEM headers and Y-pipe also.

almost sounds like mine. I have Dats y pipe and OBX cat back with no headers and mine keeps that deep tone through the whole rev, yours sounds a little raspy twords the end.

overall i like it.

Agreed, it does sound a little raspy. Not too bad though, I kinda like it too. Quieter than my car I think lol.

I'm running OBX headers/y-pipe and JPP catback (cat-less). The OBX y-pipe use a perforated resonator, not sure about the JPP catback, and not sure what brand (if other than JPP) the muffler is, but the combination makes for a very very deep tone. Sounds completely different from yours. Gets slightly raspy at the higher RPMs only.

If you can find out what JPP uses for their catback you might like that sound better.

I'll take a video tomorrow and post for comparison.

hmm toysol - the obx catback is 3in all the way back right? do you have a cat or no? i like the way it sound up to about 2-3k rpm, then it gets raspy and honda like

stringbean - i think that's the route im going real soon, 2 resonators over the 1 in the greddy

sirthomas - we should probably have the most similair setup (aside from the intake section of ur car =P) the obx should be a copy off the jpp headers, main difference being jpp uses a high flow cat, obx doesn't. I've never even looked into the jpp catback, but i def don't want it louder then what it is. right now it's def LOUD wot, everyone looks over and wonders why the hell an avalon is making those sounds lol

krispy - i def wouldn't of minded that! my honest "goal" is to have a high-ish flow exhaust, yet keep the sound closer to oem, but i love the look of the greddy evo muffler.

midias, u seem to kno the most about the sound, do you think adding the 18in resonator should cut it down and take the rasp away? the guy said its pretty much a muffler that hes putting a little after the 1st "resonator" i believe its the perforated one? not 100% sure

sorry i forgot to clarify i am only running to resonators no muffler, but if you want it quieter then adding in another one would do it, i wouldn't go smaller then 18 only because it'll only be a few db's quieter.

Good luck
hope you find the loudness and tone your looking for
