Gabe's Custom Rear Motor Mount (pic)

So when I went up to visit Gabe during the July 4th weekend we got a bunch of stuff done on my car. One of which was we installed Gabe's custom polyurethane rear motor mount. Luckily my axle came out pretty darn easily as we were all relieved to discover.

Even visually you can see just how dramatic of a difference Gabe's rear motor mount is to the stock one. I couldn't believe how little material there was in my stock mount. Ontop of that, Gabe pointed out how badly torn the rubber in the stock mount was. If I remember correctly, one side of it was completely torn loose. It's very firm material. You can't flex it easily at all, unlike the stock one which took very little effort.

Driving, there is definitely a huge difference. First thing you notice is that the car feels much firmer, especially when shifting. Before, my exhaust would vibrate up against the frame of my car when I gassed it in reverse. That's fixed. But most importantly, no more friggin wheel hop! Took it to the dragstrip the day after we installed it and my car pulled beautifully off the line, no hop but I did spin the tires a little bit. Ended up running a 14.56s quarter mile despite running on street tires and having a poor street tune. Vibrations are stronger inside the car, but that's to be expected from a firmer mount after all. It's a good feeling vibration, the car feels beefier. Apparently that vibration should lessen some once I get my polyurethane dogbone bushings in.

Here's a pic of the new custom mount and my stock one.

As I learned recently, apparently wheel hop can actually brake your transmission. So now I'm definitely very glad that we were able to install that new custom mount.

Talk to Gabe if your interested in possibly getting one of these mounts. Initially I don't think he was planning on making more of these because they took so much work for him to get it done, but now I think he's considering making a new set and with some prodding and poking I'm sure he would. :P

I changed my rear mount back in '08 but both the old mount and the dealer replacement was solid rubber; there was no space like in your old mount. Is that a difference between the Camry and Solara or between the model years?

One of the axles needs to be removed, that's all I know. Gabe could better answer your question.

Can the rear mount be replaced without removing the axle?

Just talked to Gabe. He said that the rear motor mount for the manual is solid unlike the auto mount. So I'm assuming you have a manual, because my car is an auto.

I'm not sure. I was there when they replaced it but I can't remember. :-? We need to get Gabe in here!

I've had this mount in for almost two months now and still NO wheel hop at all. Looks like it really did get rid of all of it!
