Break Question

Postby gnaw_divad » Fri Nov 14, 2003 7:03 pm

Hi, i just installed the kit that Eric was selling and i also took off the calipers to paint, however when i tested it today after i thought i was finished the breaks pretty much just go all the way to the floor.

Me and my friend bled the breaks for a long period of time but I'm thinking we must have done something wrong because when i break slowly it just goes all the way to the floor and then begins stopping, PRETTY SCARY.

PLEASE HELP !! and also im not sure if i bled the breaks right, i pretty much just sat in the car and steped on the breaks then pushed it all the way down after pumping it and then he let the valve open a little until it seemed that nomore air was coming out. But we were doing this before the test drive could that be the reason ??

hope it doesnt post twice, i just posted a reply but it dissapeared,...

Anyways, the car was off when i was pushing on the breaks but when i was testing it the car was on and when i tried to break it just depressed all the way down. It did stop the car but it felt too loose.

Also i purchased a Haynes Manuel and when i was bleeding the breaks, i did bleed it until fluid was coming out but i didnt use the hose technique that the manuel says too. I'm really hoping that it was the bleeding process because otherwise it would be a much bigger problem. :-?

I'm not going to be able to try again until tomorrow since its already pitch black. If you think it could be another problem please let me know so i can prepare for it....

THANKX for helping..

It's a good idea to use a hose so not a lot of air gets sucked into the sytem. And did you make sure to keep filling the reservoir?

I agree with these guys, sounds like you sucked air back into the lines when you were bleeding. The hose method works well, but it's time consuming. Have fun doing the bleeding :).
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Bleed it again and don't drive the car until the brakes are back in working order.

Make sure you add fluid for every 10 steps or so.

Here is how you suppose to bleed.

You need to bleed all of your brakes,
starting from the furthest brake from the reservoir.
i.e from passenger rear, driver rear, passenger front and lastly driver front brakes.

Use the hose and watch for those bubbles...

Open the bleeder, and (ask ur friend to) step on the brake.
Close the bleeder and (ask ur friend to) release on the brake.
(dont forget to fill in the brake fluids to the reservoir)
Keep doing it until no more bubbles in the hose.

OR (if you have a speed bleeder)
Keep step on the brake and release until no more bubbles in the hose.
(dont forget to fill in the brake fluids to the reservoir)

Alright guys, i finally finished the bleeding process again and it seemed to work out really well. The tube when i was done was completely clear and had no bubbles.
And now the car breaks fine, but at a complete stop i can still push the breaks all the way to the floor with enough pressure, im not sure if this is normal? I tried all the things the Hayes says to check to make sure its airtight and it seems perfect. Hopefully thats it.

Also i had a little accident, while i was jacking up the car (my driveways on a slope), i put the jackstands in the back already and i was jacking it up to fit them in the front, the car fell over on its front rotors. it scraped up the kit just a little on the right but the car drives fine and nothin seems to be broken? should i be aware of any damages that may have occured to the cars frame. The fall didnt seem too ruff but one of the jacks just gave up and got bent in half.

But overall the install SEEMS okay, not sure. It made some scapping noises in the begining but after a bit of street driving the sound went away.

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

I did that once to an avalon, only thing that needed attention was the alignment.

Now to get you to say brakes instead of breaks. :)

I have another question regarding my brakes. To Ericsol, or anyone who has done the big brake upgrade kit..

About 2 weeks ago I put in the big brake kit and finally successfully bled the breaks and broke them in. However, when i start the car up for the first time in the morning or after a long time of not drivingm the brakes still feels very lose compared to my other car. Even during normal driving sometimes it feels like i have to push the brake down more to get the car to stop. I did not deem this as a huge problem because the car still stops great, only i have to push it down more. (I dont have to apply more pressure it just seems that the break does down much more than before.) I believe i bled then correctly because i followed the manuel to the T and all the tests checked out, is this normal for this BiG Break Kit ??

Also, an off topic question, i have noticed that my car dies very quickly. This weekend along with the last i've been driving my other car around and my Solara was not driven for only about 5 days. And thats all it took for the battery to die, it wasnt completely dead, the lights and radio still turned on but the car wouldnt start. This is the third time it's died in the past month. A simple jump and the car was fine, but as for my other car i can leave it undriven for weeks and the car still starts right up. Do any of you have the same problem. I do have an optima RED top battery so i think the only other thing could be the alternator.
