Traction control??

Traction control??

Postby 20SoLaRa02 » Tue Sep 17, 2002 1:04 am

i was wondering if my 2002 se v6 solara has traction control? when i raced my car i started to high on line and i peeled out to much but it wasn't really a peel out. it was like my tires were bouncing a lil and i could feel my entire front end jus doint weird stuff. it was like tryin to grab traction and i saw a light come on somewhere in the gauges but i didn't pay attention. i think it was the traction control light. If i do have them how come i don't have a button to turn it off like the car manual says??

It most likely does. The button on my car is just below the gearshift to the right.

TRAC is only available on SLE V6 models. Meaning it's only available for Auto. TRAC kills 0-60 and 1/4 times because it uses a combination of ABS and engine timing to prevent the loss of traction.

I've been wondering if having my traction conrol on would hurt acceleration. For those of you with this option, how many have it on/off?

Should I turn mine off? I would in a second if it'd improve performance. Or are you saying it only kills 0-60 and 1/4 when it engages?

no, having traction control on does not hurt acceleration unless it kicks in, so unless you're peeling out from every light...

the only time i turn it off is when im racing, other than that why bother?

That's what I figured but I wasn't sure. I've kept it on the entire time I've owned my '99 w/o giving it much thought.

What you are experiencing is very common on FWD cars. Its wheel hop. Just ease off the gas to stop it or get a stiffer suspension. BTW wheel hop isn't good for your car so try not to do it

Traction control? ah you mean the "no fun button?"

I turn it off most of the time when I drive. It's gonna kill me if I have to get out of an intersection fast.

TRAC ON hurts your acceleration times because the computer uses a combo of engine power retardation and brake pulsing to help control front wheel traction.

Hmmm...so does that mean that if you do a tranny swap from Auto to 5 speed you loose Traction Control?
What about Cruise Control?

So should I turn the traction control OFF for performance purposes?

Seems to me like I should. It's more of a nuisance when I'm trying to accelerate on dry roads with gravel present, however it may be useful in icy conditions. I haven't disengaged it for several years now...hopefully everything will work without any problems!

hrm, the cost involved isn't worth it. but yes, you would lose the traction control, not sure about the cruise, but i think that would still be intact.

would turning trac control off increas mpg? i mean, assuming its not being used most of the time, does it take more power just to keep it on and even more for it to kick in?
if that makes any sense
thanks

--- trac ONLY ENGAGES when your wheels start to slip. it has nothing to do with mpg or top speed or even 0-60. whenever u race TURN IT OFF. if the comp senses any wheel slip it cuts engine power to regain traction. when you hit the TRAC OFF button, its like you dont even have it on your car anymore. i have a 99 SLE and i live in chicago, it just snowed and trac totallly hellps with traction in the slush and snow. but in the summer time i turn it off almost everytime i get in my car (if its not raining). if u drive fairly aggressively like i do, its more fun to turn it off when the weathers dry.
