Oil in combustion chamber

Oil in combustion chamber

Postby TadS » Fri Nov 21, 2003 5:50 am

I was changing my spark plugs yesterday, and I was very upset to find oil in the combustion chamber of cylinder #4 (3rd in firing order). What do you guys think valves, rings, or pistons? If it were any of these things what would you recommend getting done at the same time? For example, if it's a bad valve guide should I just go ahead and replace the head with one built by Flatlander? If it's the rings or pistons with they have to pull the motor? This is a little out of my scope of knowledge, and it's going to put a damper on my planned supercharger purchase :(, but I figure if I am already going to have parts out of the motor I may as well get better than O.E. upgrades, as the labor is going to be the most expensive part of whatever is wrong. Thx for your thoughts. BTW, I am over 100k now.

I would think it's the piston rings.

It shouldn't be too hard of a job and you don't have to pull the motor.

The leak may be due to the improperly-breakin process that most people use.

I don't think it's from break in, as I was pretty careful about that. I would guess it's for the 700+ miles a week I put on it, then on weekends I go murder it doing the autocross. Guess you must pay to play :fadein: . If I wouldn't have been changing the plugs I wouldn't have even known there was a problem. Anyway. I have a diagnostic scheduled for Tuesday. When I find out exactly what's wrong I'll post up a "Whose parts should I Buy?" list.

Well that crisis is over. It was.... the seal around the sparkplug tube. I was really bummed about thinking that I was going to have to move back the supercharge purchase, but now it's all good under the hood  . Only set me back 250, so I am pretty happy right now :).

Sort of counter intuitive, but it does make sense. I am happy to say my cylinder compression passed with flying colors. Talk about a bunch of confused Toyota mechanics. Here was a plug, sitting in oil and the valves, and rings were fine. One of them actually jokingly asked me if I had just poured some in there for something to do on my Thanksgiving break . They don't know what caused the leaking, but I started my car up this morning and there was no oil burn off for the first couple of minutes, so I am glad.
