253 miles while Fuel tank is half full

253 miles while Fuel tank is half full

Postby xyntax » Tue Dec 02, 2003 2:03 am

Hey is this normal? I drive my car 80% city and 20% highway. Before, I usually get 300 miles on a full tank, 320 if I'm lucky. Now, after installing TRD muffler, I'm running 253 miles and the fuel gauge needle is sitting in the middle. I'm kinda worried that MAYBE my fuel gauge is reading wrong now. I usually fill up every 7 days with my driving routines. Now, it's the eighth day and my tank is still half-full according to my gauge :o

Also, I'm suspecting that my car before wasn't running the way it should because of the low gas mileage I was getting. I think it was low because some guys here with the same car are running more miles on a full tank than I was at a similar driving condition :x

Is there any way I could check or should I just wait til my car dies in the middle of the road for running out of gas while my gauge tells me I still have 1/4 to go :(

253 with half tank is a little odd. Even with 100% highway you probably wouldn't be gettin 500 miles on a tank. However, the gauge does adjust slowly sometimes and I've noticed the last quarter of the tank goes a lot faster than the other 3 on my car. I usually get over 400 on a tank, though, as long as I don't drive it too hard.

Honestly 253 with a half tank sounds pretty close to accurate the way my gauge moves.
Please stop humping my car, owner privilege!

Yeah I noticed that too. The fuel goes faster after the first half. Yes I also noticed it adjusts from stop and start. Before, the highest I have attained was 395 miles which was probably 70% highway.

I just think I am getting the right gas mileage on my car rather than an improvement and that before the installation of the TRD muffler, my car was wasting too much gas.

Oh and I noticed that my car picks up quicker at higher RPMs now compared to before. I had posted here in the past about hesitations from my car. And now those hesitations are gone

Yeah, thanks to you. I still think you should show everyone else what you've done to your Solara :) Really nice IMO.

I'm at 250 miles on my current tank and its still well over the half mark, i would say its normal! (if your really paranoid..just keep 1/2 a gallong of gas in a jerry can in the trunk...but expect to be overcome by fumes when you drive!)

if you really did 80% city and ur needle is exactly in the middle then i think something might be wrong. that's jus my opinion. just full tank ur car and see how much gas u put in. we have a 18.5 gas tank so make ur best assumptions from there.

also is ur car manual or auto? i4 or v6?

my comment is from my experience with a v6

on an I4, 250 with the needle halfway is about dead on. if its mostly highway driving on the v6, 250 wouldnt be too hard to beleive either. i dont think u have anything to worry about. the needle drops much faster for the last half, and especially the last quarter of the tank. i get 250 out of the first half, 100 out of the next quarter, and 50 out of the last quarter. if anything, ur needle will drop surprisingly fast for hte last portion of ur tank, but i doubt it will be on 1/4 when ur tank is empty and leave u stranded. goto www.howstuffworks.com and read how the lil' gauge works, then ull see that something like a false reading of 1/4 when the tank is actually empty shouldnt happen.

when the needle is at half, your car already ate 10 gal of gas and our cars have 18.5 gal

Cool! Thanks y'all! I guess I wasn't getting the right gas-mileage before and didn't even know it. With the same driving habbit/routines, I was getting 150 miles (max) on the half tank before. I was even happy when the lil orange light comes up and my odometer says 300 miles on it. I should be expecting somewhere around 400 now! :D

wow 150 on half.. and 300max before...

even with 75% city driving i get about 260 on street and half way... and on a full tank my car will get about 410 to 430 from full to empty without the light turning on yet...

but with about 70% hwy driving i get close to 450 to the tank...

the better you maintian your car the better the gas milage... also the way the car is driven. I dont drive my car hard.. i try to stay under 2500rpm. even tho i have a i-4.. that is still really good IMO compared to what i have heard about others with i-4's,

i change my oil every 2700 miles.. also i use 91 oct gas most the time. about every 3 of 5 tanks. also i drive about 70% hwy most the time.. but sometimes i do drive more city and sit in traffic from and to work...
