Can't see nav. radio screen when top is down

My current car problem is that when the top is down, I usually can't see what's on the navigation radio screen. Does everyone have this problem? If I bought a newer radio, would it be bright enough to overpower the sun? Any brand of radio you can recommend for this feature? (When it's cloudy out or I go under trees, or if I'm driving into the sun, I can usually see well, but not otherwise.)
