What would you guys rate them? My maxima was in a wreck a couple months ago and I'm driving around in an Accord for the time being but hoping to get my own car by July. I've been considering a Solara 5speed and looked around the internet. There are a couple in Minnesota that are close by that I can get. I was just wondering how you guys wouls rate it

I'd say that the stock unit is fair, at best. It's not as smooth as a Honda. The throws are long, and some of the gates, especially 3rd, are pretty notchy. The clutch is so-so. This car was not designed as a true sports car. You can get a TRD short throw shifter that greatly improves the shifting, however. A clutch upgrade is a good idea, too, especially if you plan to increase the power.

Is the SS just a shorter shift lever or is it a true SS?

It'a a true short shifter. The length of the lever is pretty much the same as stock. It actually shortens the throws. Even with the short shifter, 3rd is still notchy, but overall it's a big improvement over stock.
