Need major gearhead advice

Oh, my poor Solara.......

My check engine light came on and AutoZone gave me an OBDII code of P0135: O2 Heater Circuit Malfunction, Bank 1 Sensor 1.

1) Anybody else have experience with this problem? Any known causes? I suspect some STP fuel injector cleaner I ran may be the culprit.

2) What are the side effects of running with this O2 sensor out? I've been told it could affect my cats (in addition to gas mileage), but how long will it take for problems to arise? I need to take a 180 mile road trip tomorrow..will I be ok?

3) Does anybody know how much it should cost to fix it? I know the part is 130, but what's labor supposed to be? The dealer quoted me 280 P&L. Can I DIY or maybe take it someplace else?

Thanks in advance

its a blown sensor. replace it and it should be driveable for that 180 mile trip. however, if the light should remain on after repl the sensor and resetting the ecu, i would not use the solara.

I did 3 of these on my Celica, and one on my Solara. I think that they're a pretty easy DIY for the 4 cylinder motors at least.

You will be able to drive, but don't expect to race anyone. In my experience the biggest effect of dead O2 sensor is loss of low-end power and crappy fuel economy :D.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

I've been driving around with 0135 code for 2 months already. The ecu just makes the car run rich. Side effects: f00ked up the plugs, cats, and waste of gas. The car feels just as fast... probably because it's slow in the first place hahaha... anyways.

The part is 130 bucks? That's quite expensive. You may wanna check some place else.

Thanks guys, I ended up just taking it to the dealer. Total came out to $312 and change. She runs a lot smoother now, better power from 3K-5K..just like new. Hopefully no more repairs for a while!
