HELP! car doesn't stay on

HELP! car doesn't stay on

Postby krook » Wed Dec 31, 2003 2:46 pm

this flippin' sucks: i decide to change my oil last night so i can start the new year with fresh oil. yeah, lame. i know. anyway, i do everything routine; jack up the car, drain oil, replace oil filter, fill with new oil. then i leave it.

this morning, my car started. . .BUT IT WON'T STAY STARTED. even if i give it gas, it still dies out. i have gas in there, so it can't be lack of fuel.

i'm figuring something must have happened when i changed my oil, but what . ..i don't know. any ideas on what it could be?

My boyfriend is the manager of a local Oil Change Business and asks
-Is your new oil is different than the old one?
-Did you drain all of the old out, before the new was inserted?

Dude looks like someone is not starting off the year right. Just when you think your doing something to start fresh right. If that is all you did I have no idea what it could be. Try disconnecting your negative battery line, wait 15 mins, reconnect and try again. Just a thought. Maybe your Computer chip was like not Y2004 compliant. Just playen. Good Luck!

Get a multimeter, measure the Voltage across the battery terminals when the car is off. Then measure the Voltage across the battery terminals when the car started.

Post the readings.

I also have a feeling that you used some thick oil and that's not recommended in winter.

The guy is in Hawaii. I don't think winter issues affect him.

Check your plugs by your throttle body (idle controls). Go through the engine bay, make sure everything is plugged in. My money's on an unplugged sensor or something. Check to make sure your battery terminals are secure and uncorroded as well.

The car runs on the alternator after it starts. I am sure it doesn't have much to do with the battery.

If his alternator is not good then it will shut down with a disconected battery.

awww..I'm sorry :( Give it a kiss to make it better!! Hahah.

My mechanic finally found my "stalling" problem I had during the summer. After the techron it seemed sorta ok...but then a few weeks ago the car kept cutting out in the middle of the road when I tried to give it gas, and when it did go I looked like a first time stick driver!! (at least everyone stayed away from me on the road!)

I was told that the "cap on the gasket was gone and I had water in my fuel line". Since it was right before xmas he only charged me $20 and he even picked my car up and delievered it back to me while I was at work on a SATURDAY :) ohhh yeaaaa

Sounds like an alternator prob. I'm not sure though, that's my first guess

Check your oil level. Sometimes if you are running low the car won't start or will stall out

Good luck

sounds like a loose vaccum hose to me.. but not sure.. your car will still run with low oil but just not good for it(plus you will see the low oil light come on), also if your car starts then its not starter or the batt since it cranks.

second guess is alternator. get the voltage checked on it... mite not be holding a charge.

What happens when it dies out? Do you retain electrical power? My thought would be that your fuel pump is on its last leg, or something with the injectors maybe? I'm not all that mechanically inclined, but since you ddn't mention anything about losing electrical power, I would rule out battery/alternator...
