PROBLEM SOLVED!
after a lot of frustration, and searching through the Haynes manual, i finally figured out what was wrong. it was my S-AFCII that was causing the problem! when i reconnected the air flow wire, without the S-AFCII inline, the car started perfectly.
something must be wrong with it; i wonder if there's a warranty on it.....
