Anyways, both my friends have performance mufflers; when they were getting their state inspection, their cars didn't pass because of their mufflers? Their mufflers aren't even that loud. I'm from Massachusetts....So, is it illegal to upgrade your regular muffler to a performance one? Is this a Massachusetts law i'm not aware of? If it is, I'm moving....

Along the same lines, I got pulled over the other day and the cop told me my modified exhaust was illegal and I needed to change it. He didn't give me a ticket for it, so I just figured he was a hater who hides behind his badge. I'm not going to change it of course, but does anyone know if there is any truth to it being illegal?
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

find out what is legal.
here in NJ, they cannot be above a certain decibel level, 100db i think. a more reputable muffler will not exceed 95db for this very reason.

I wouldn't recommend wasting money on a different exhaust system. You will likely just end up with more noise and no increase in performance. Before I bought my Solara I had a SHO and changed to Flowmaster mufflers and new cats (after my cats blew out and plugged up the exhuast system!). Only thing it did was make the car sound like a dirt bike at about 3000 rpm. Absolutely no performance improvement. Looking at the construction of the Solara V6 exhuast sytem, I think it's a good design. If however you have a SC, then an increase in the size of the exhaust system might offer some help (although still probably not worth the investment).

I agree. Exhaust upgrade should follow a major engine modification because it was designed for the best (or somewhat close to best haha) conditions possible for the car... although I believe they cheaped out when using the same exhaust for the v6 and 4-cyl hahaha

Just changing out the exsaust to a performance one will not give "noticeable" increase. I am sure that a Dyno will prove if there are changes. Talking real numbers I mean 2 hp increase for the TRD muffler. How can you notice that? Not me. :drinking:
