Best Oil and Filter to use

Postby Mudd » Tue Jan 13, 2004 6:13 pm

For filters, I almost always use OEM. PureOne in a pinch. Never, NEVER Fram (look it up, you're better off using a coffee filter than a Fram). The reason being is most OEM filters make use of a check valve, which keeps some oil in the system, to prevent starvation at start-up.

Not a huge deal, but it's enough for me.

The Synthetic oil may be better but its main advantage is that you can go longer without changing it, but since I always change my oil every 3k or less I just use the cheap stuff. Mobile 1 is probably better but I refuse to chage based on some mustang, I could run a test and minipulate the results to say anything I want, havent you seen the Tornado comercials,ok maybee thats too far, Use what ever oil makes you feel best, because I hate when people try to tell me what to do, it's your car so make the decsion based on what suits your needs.

so obvious that you didnt see the oil comparsion in the mustang forum. the hardcore technical guy have picture to shown what he found. people who dont do research may believe tornado or eletrical turbo works. its your car of course you can use whatever you want.

also, most of tunner said OEM have best quality (of course mobil 1 is better, but compare value per dollars, oem is the best). my friend also told me the toyota oem filter is the best (made by denso)

i can't speak for aftermarket filters, but the OEM Toyota filter has a check valve which maintains pressure inside the engine. this allows oil to remain up in the head of the engine (rather than draining down into the oil pan) when the engine is off. since 80% of engine wear occurs in the first 30 seconds after startup, it is important to not allow the oil to drain down into the oil pan (where it does no good upon startup).

Interesting, I have always used FRAM just because everyone has it, but where do you get the filters that have the check valve (OEM or Mobile 1 or whatever else)? I guess the dealer? As for oil, Mobile 1 and Valvoline are supposed to be the best, and I've also recently heard good things about Quaker State. Sorry to say Pennsoil dyno is suppoed to be bad b/c it leaves deposits. I've also heard of people getting HP gains (small ones) by using Royal Purple, I've never tried it but I will next oil change.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

I've also heard that FRAM filters are bad. I think I'll use OEM.

last time I changed the oil on my G/F's honda, I noticed something funny. I was always driving 30 miles to get the OE honda filter, but while installing I noticed that FRAM was imprinted on the metal on the base of the filter. Question is, does honda contract out a desgin of "thier" filter to FRAM to produce, or does honda just use FRAM filters with honda logo. I know there is the "check valve" issue. Any ideas?

Sure does!!! Same ones I put in my GSR for three years, I just never looked that close at them. :drinking:

Next time I change her oil, I'll buy an extra filter and a fram, open em up and see what gives.

Ordered my OEM filters from this company:

Had great service everytime. Also use Mobil 1 5W-30 for the oil.

what's everyones opinion on this....i have about 25k miles on my car and i've been doing oil changes at the dealer and on my own. i'm considering switching to synthetic but not sure if i should this late and if its worth it. i do oil changes every 3k miles. i plan to start using toyota filters from what i have read, but i'm still undecided on wether or not i should change to synthetic.

thanx

Go synthetic. You're fine to change usually up until at least 50-75k miles.

Ok Since you guys are on the topic of this. I have been going to the dealer to get all my oil changes since i bought the car new. They use the Mobile oil But dont know if its syn. or not. I doubt it. But they also used 10w30. For as long as i know.

What is our cars recommended oil?? In the manual it say 5w30 but i have been told this is for break in period and low milage cars. I know alot of ppls use 5w30. What the recommend milage for the 5w30. Also the Oil is really thin, with the high temps here in Cali and how hot it can get in the summer time is 10w30 safe?? Or should i change back to 5w30?? The dealer told me its all the same. And that in cali its better to use 10w30.

I am looking into change to Syn. Oil and prolly to the mobile 1 syn.
What do you guys recommend i do and what type such as 5w30 or 10w30.
IM currently at about 43K Miles. next oil change is due in about 2 weeks or 800m miles. which ever comes first. Im looking into changing before the CenCal Meet.

I know for high mile engine you used a thicker oil to lube better. On my old integra i used 10w40 since it has a little over 200K on it..

Any Suggestions and all comments would be appreciated.

They can use either 5w30 or 10w30. It's not the heat you have to worry about, it's the cold... and even then the cold is not a huge difference. In that area you are absoultely fine running 10w30 all year round.

TRD has an oil filter for our cars. I am surprised no one brought it up yet. Anyone used it before? Not for everyday driving?

Anyways. I have been using Mobil 1 full synthetic since I purchased the car and recently with the last 3 oil changes have gone back to regular @ the dealer cause I just felt lazy and needed money at the time.

I am going back to Synthetic on my next one coming up as soon as I get a chance. I am due now. I got great info here about that check valve thing. I am going to do some research about Mobile 1's filter and see if they have that feature. I'll post my reply about that unless someone can post if they know.

Kenny, The manual says 5w - 30 and for some reason the dealer also puts 10w 30 in my Sienna too. Why? I have no Idea. All I know is that 5w-30 is better for colder environments. I am sticking with the manual and the OEM oil cap :drinking:

EDIT: Mobil not Mobile!
