bent rims

bent rims

Postby Solaradude » Tue Jan 27, 2004 1:02 am

I'm not familiar with the term. I mean...I could picture a rim with spokes all bent and stuff. A couple of days ago, my friend bent his rim but they still looked ok to me. Can somone explain what "bent rim" really is? or possibly a picture?

many thanks,

It means that the rim is not round. The portion of the rim on which the tire is mounted has been bent, usually due to hitting something such as a pothole. Imagine a wheel with a low profile tire hitting a pothole. Due to the low profile, there is very little cushioning so that when the tire hits the pothole, the rim absorbs a significant amount of the impact. Sometimes the force bends the rim, putting it out of round.

Not all bent rims are physically bent...when put on the balancing maching, the straightness (or bentness...if thats a term) can easily become known. Not all bent rims are doomed...depending on bentness, tireshops can straighten them out again. My celica rims were straight on the roads, looked right, but on the balancing maching, people always told me one of them was bent...(kept that in the rears..and eventually sold the car). Cost to repair the rim was over what it costed...hence never bothered..

Get forged rims =D It's so much less of a hassle! Especially in pothole infested LA

so once ur ur rims are bent then it would mess up with balance right? (ie: car pulling to the right/left)

left/right pull is usually alignment, not balance.
a bent rim will usually vibrate at highway speeds. whether or not you notice the vibration depends on the severity of the bend.

Exactly what Dav said....Read my above statement. I had a bent rim on my celica, didn't know it was bent, didn't feel it was bent, as far as my car/suspension, etc it was straight..didn't feel vibrations that i wasn't supposed to fell....but everytime it was kept in the rear cus the wheel balancing guys told me if i move it front, then i'd feel the vib's. This went on for a year or more like that....So no car doesn't pull or likewise...
