It's amazing how that light comes on and people come here and ask what it could be. It could be like one of 800 things! If you read the manual, it says check the gas cap, since you did that, if you read further on in the manual, it says that if it isn't the cap to get the car checked out. There si your answer right there. Sorry to be a dick about this but this question comes up every week.

...u should watch ur language...people here are only tryin to help, no need to get all pissed off.

The engine light comes on because of numerous reasons. The best way to know what the problem is, is to take it somewhere to get the odbii code. There is no easy fix unless u know urself what the problem is.

Take your car to Autozone, they will check it out for you for free. It's more probably that the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. Mine has come on on 40K miles and ever since I have not fixed it.

You're the f*cking idiot for thinking anyone should help you after you talked like this.

If you don't post more specific details then no one can help you.

First off chief, I said I was sorry for being a dick, but it's liek coming onto this board and saying "My car doesn't sound right, it's black and has 25,000 miles...what is it?" No one knows, now if you're more specific witht he problem, people might be able to help. Check engine lights come on and almost never does the car start to react in a noticable way so the only way to get your problem fixed is to take it to the dealer. My light came on and it was like some kind of hose fitting that came loose...who would have ever known.

An old addage to live by. RTFM. Stands for READ THE F&%'N MANUAL. There's a search engine that works fine, thanks, and everyone that owns a car needs to own a factory service manual (mine will be here on Monday, I bought my car last Thursday). Put forth some effort, and you will be rewarded. Ask stupid questions, and you will be treated as a stupid person.

anything wierd will trigger the check engine light on. no matter what you need to have OBDII scanner to get the error code and fix the problem. you can either spend $150 to buy the scanner or pay $50 to dealer or mechanics to scan it for you. Thats the ONLY way to find out what is it.

please no more uneducated talking thanks.

What happens if a mechanic deferred?

Will it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Will it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it would sag
like a heavy load.

Or will it explode?

Ya except all you really have to do is disconnect the battery cable, the rest of it doesn't apply.

There's no way you can solve this over a forum, go and get the code pulled and you will know right away. MGLax13 was right.

true MGLax13 could've been more polite. i think he's just experiencing that low tolerance level we all experience at some point or another while on the boards. i, too, have looked at a post and said to myself, "what is this flippin' idiot posting!?!" *cough* *cough*superpenis*cough* *cough*

but on the same token, you DO have to be more clear on any other specifics that happened before you CEL came on.

it's probably just your O2 sensor, mines went out for no reason at around 30K. as mentioned, reset the code by taking the negative off the battery for a minute or so.
