Dealer tune up

Dealer tune up

Postby dan99solara » Tue Feb 10, 2004 9:56 am

Hey I just want to say im fairly new and this is a great forum and it has been really helpful. Thanks a lot guys! Ok, before people jump on me I have searched other posts but I want to make sure this is right. I'm getting a tune up at the dealer and I want to make sure I'm not forgeting anything that I should get done. (my moms paying for it so price isn't a big factor). This is what my dealership wants to do.

16 point imspection
fill fluids
oil filter change
air filter
coolant
replace spark plugs
rotate tires and pressure
A/C refresher
tranny drain & refill
battery cleaning
brake inspecion
clean and adjust rear brakes
fuel induction service
replace wipers
window washer fluid
wynn's oil & fuel additive
--for 450$ (which of course is over-priced)

Now... a lot of those things i don't want. i recently changed my oil and had the wheels rotated, and a new K&N filter. So I guess my question would be, can I just pick out things I want them to do, and then they add it all up. Because I also want my fuel filter changed. Please tell me if theres anything else you recommend I should get done. Thanks a lot everyone!! sorry for the long post!

stupid question?

Postby Solara916 » Wed Feb 11, 2004 3:34 pm

Hey, this might be a stupid question to many of you on this forum, but what exactly does adjustin the timing belt do to the car?

I see nothing there that a person of basic mechanical knowledge couldn't do themselves (with the possible exception of the A/C thing, but even that's easy if you get the recharge kit).

I'd say do what you can yourself, then turn it over to the dealer for what you can't.

There is no really adjusting the timing belt, just timing. If you have to ask what it is, you probably don't want to fiddle with it, as you could do more harm than good (and it's most likely not necessary).

you replace the timing belt at about 90k miles. Mudd i agree but im gettin it done for free so i might as well get it done. plus i dont want to mess with draining the tranny and refilling it, replacing the back spark plugs (hard to get to) etc etc.

another stupid question

Postby Solara916 » Wed Feb 11, 2004 3:57 pm

This is probably another stupid question, but is there any way to get rid of the noise that the engine makes. It's the type of noise that happens just through wear-and-tear of the engine. I don't really know how to describe the noise. Would replacing my timing belt or getting my valves adjusted get rid of that noise?

^ changing your belt will probably help gas mileage and alter the engine noise a tad, however the engine sounds you are describing is audible from the normal wear and tear of daily driving.

you cant really adjust the timming belts unless you advance the gear manually. that is a def no-no.

by advancing the timming belt, it alters combustion and needs more fuel to keep up with the advancement.

I'd do a full tranny flush, coolant and radiator flush, spark plugs, wiper blades, check wheel alignment. Do this at a reputable non-dealer for about $150-$200...

- Your rear brakes do not need adjusting (v6 has disk brakes)
- Tranny drain and refill leaves a lot of old fluid in
- Coolant drain and refill - same, you want it flushed
- Fuel service - may be, but not sure you'll notice a difference...

I think I did

coolant service
tranny drain & refill
fuel induction service

for 60K service (I only did the ones I felt necessary and most of them I can do myself).
I am not sure when I need to replace spark plugs. I think I read somewhere that solara needs tune up after 100k miles or something.
I am waiting for 90K to do timing belt and I am pretty sure something else will need replacement.

Best maintenance for my car was when I got new tires (oh man..I couldn't believe how much better car drove) and new brake pads. Putting new battery in also made the car quieter in idle (??? doesn't make sense but it's true!
