I've been using the wrong model oil filter!?

Postby krzyray » Tue Feb 24, 2004 10:29 pm

I went to Pep Boys today to buy some more oil filters, and I just realized that I've been buying the wrong model oil filter :o

I've been using the Purolator L14476 instead of Purolator L14477.

I could have sworn that I looked in the application booklet, and it said to use the L14476?

Anyways I looked up the specifications at http://www.pureoil.com/
and the only difference between the L14476 and the L14477 is the height.

Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Height: 3.52 for L14477
Height: 2.93 for L14476

Type of Filter: Spin-on
Threads: 3/4-16
Thread Pitch: UNF-2B
Relief Valve P.S.I.: 14-18
O.D.: 2.69

Is this going to cause my car any damage or problems?

No matter what the book says for your car, if a larger filter fits, its better. That means a lot more oil flow, as well as a larger oil cleaning surface. On my acura legend, i used an OEM honda NSX oil filter, which is the same diameter of one for the legend, but it is a lot longer. this greatly improved my oil flow and allowed for less oil breakdown in the long run. even tho i was using a full synthetic.

oil filter size

Postby bfl62581 » Wed Feb 25, 2004 7:15 am

You were using a smaller filter then you were supposed to. How many miles do you have on your car? What kind of oil are you using?

This will determine how much extra "gunk" is in your motor. If you changed your motor ever 3,000 miles (even though Toyota now said I could go 6,000 w/ fully synthetic), you will be absolutely fine (or should be)

I would however switch to the appropriate size.

What filters does everyone here use? I am a fan of the Fram UltraGuard.

I have about 53,000 miles. I have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic since about 10,000 miles. I always change my oil between 3,000-4,000. Yes I will be definitely purchasing the correct oil filter from now on.

yeah crack is wack! they must be because they offer regular, syn/blend, and full/syn. If that was the case it would also say it in the manual. It only shows the grade they recomend so the type should not matter.

if you want to use toyota OEM filter, use the Yzzb5, the original soalra use Yzzb1, these B5 are for seqouia or all v8 i think, I just changed my oil today and use the B5 since i brought a case of filter for the seqouia, same diamater but just an probably 1 inch longer than the b1.
