new rims

new rims

Postby LifeguardSLE V6 » Tue Mar 02, 2004 8:59 pm

To my surprise this morning, I went out to my car, and found the rear left tire fully deflated. Turns out, there were 7, yes 7 nails in that one tire alone; God only knows how many are in the others. So now I'm forced (oh darn) to get new rims and tires. I've pretty much decided on this wheels: www.wheelsnext.com/prod_imgs/img-178-large.jpg
They come with 205/40/17 tires, will those work? Any input on the rims is appreciated.

interesting design. however what's offset?

the width of the rim seems a little thin imho. since it only req's 205 tires.

I just talked to someone in sales, and they said it was a 17x7.5 wheel. But it doesn't matter now, since they're also discontinued. Since I need rims immediately, any input from anyone on 17" rims will be of great help.

Sorry about these posts that're back to back, but I'm in a bind trying to get rims ASAP. I found some sweet looking BSA rims, which also come with 205/40/17 Nanking tires. The offset is 38 to 40. Pics are at www.wheelguyz.com/cgi-bin/prodspics/BSA291.jpg

they should fit with 205 for sure, but try to go 215

as long as its 5x114.3 with an offset of +38 to +45 you should be ok

I'm not a LARGE fan of either, but I like the second ones more because they make the rims look bigger. The first ones look too...basic. However, its all a matter of personal opinion. They usually send tires with the 205/40/17 size because no one wants them...its a real thin tire and extremely low profile. They may be great for show, but if you're gonna drive with them, make sure ALL roads are PERFECTY flat!

They don't look that strong. With 205/40/17, they will be bent right away if you drive over potholes.

With 17s, IMO you're going to want atleast 215/45 or 215/50. Like the others said, 40 series does not provide enough cushion over potholes, plus they are lower profile than 45 or 50 and might actually make your rims look smaller since there will be a larger fender gap.

Not to mention... you have to rev higher, and odometer turns faster than the actual distance you actually travel.

yep it will be off and the rims look smaller. Our cars need bigger tires. Leave the 205/40 for more compact cars. Take a look at the web links forum for a site that you can compare upgrading wheels and tires. I'm to lazy to go back and post the exact site. Anyone else?

I agree with everyone else that 205/40 is WAY too small for a Solara. Geez, that's the size I used to have on my Integra. Before I upgraded to 18's on my Solara, I had 17's with 235/45 tires on them. They fit perfect, and seemed to match the overall stock diameter the best. If you get small tires like 205/40's, it will look dumb. Plus as others stated, the engine will need to rev higher, and you will rack up more miles on your odometer than you actually travel. So based on past experience, I recommend 235/45 tires for 17's.
