Removal of Stock Resonator

Removal of Stock Resonator

Postby CASTRO » Sat Feb 28, 2004 9:52 am

Im thinking of havng my stock resonator removed and just keepign my stock muffler till I decide on getting a nice deep aftermarket. I've been bothered by how quiet/stock like the catbacks have been ex:apex-i and was thinking that the best way for me to go is no resonator and single good quality muffler.

**Anyone have experience with what the car would sound like w/o the stock resonator?**

Yea i did it. Its really not a good thing to do..... Its not any louder it just has a dumb sound now. It cracks and pops ( that also might be because of the blower) But it really is not an improvment in the sound. I know someone had done this and they had a custom one put back in because it was so bad.

removing the resonator and keeping the stock muffler on is not going to do very much and besides with the resonator taken of youre going to need a new pipe to make up for the place where the resonator was. seems to me if you want a slightly louder exhuast get rid of the resonator and change the exhuast, keeping the stokc one and taking off the reonsaot r is a waste of money, do it all the way or wait and do it all at one time.

No the resinator on our cars is basically a strait through pipe that is perferated on the inside with a layer of sound absorbing material around that. The exhaust flows strait through, it just stops any resonating through the pipe. ... honestly, it is a waste of money and time .... esp with stock everything else.

so its the pipe that goes form the catalytic converter to the muffler?

^ no. just think of a pre-muffler. that's what a resonator is.

if you look under your car on the mid pipe section, there's a round muffler looking can there. that is your resonator.

hmmm i dont see how it would smell more if i took out the stock resonator. :( I am looking towards a hyper medallion muffler and fatter piping but was thinking that I didnt like the resonator being there to modify the output sound. I have allready heard an Apex catback system and well, wasnt pleased with the results. Isnt the cat supposed to clean things up so it wouldnt smell bad?

taking the resonator will not smell more or less than the horrid stench it already puts out.

apex ws is for people who dont like exhaust noise.

naw, the cat converter should be the thing with a little plate protector on it, the resonator is the longer chunk that looks like a mini muffler.
