Weird vibration

Weird vibration

Postby redkysolarase » Sun Mar 07, 2004 11:30 am

When I'm going 45 mph and up in my car it gets a vibration in the steering wheel. I've checked all the lug bolts to make sure they are tight on there so I don't know what else I can do. Do you guys think maybe a front sway bar would solve that or what? Thanks for any input.

Ditto.

When you get them balance I would check the wear also.
I was having vibration @ 70mph, and when I got new tires, vibration gone becuase of the balance.

its either unbalanced tires or uneven wear.

Not to be redundant, but I agree; it's probably your tire balance or uneven tire wear. I also wanted to add that if your tires are wearing unevenly (for instance, the top is more worn than the bottom), it is likely a direct result of your wheels being unbalanced for an extended amount of time.

I just had that problem at about the same speed with a set of SSR Competitions I just bought. They came with plastic centering rings in them that wouldn't allow the center cup to go on so I took the centering rings out to start with and they were running great. Then I got the alluminum centering rings. When I put them on, I had that problem. I took them off and the vibration left with them... I had the nuts propperly torqued to 76ft-lbs too. -JoeB

Thanks guys. I didn't even think of that. Do you think that'll get rid of the vibration when I'm braking hard too or is that a whole different story?

JoeB, that's interesting about the center rings. So do you have no center rings on right now? My steering wheel has shaken from day 1 with my rims, and I have aluminum center rings (and yes, the rims were balanced). I always thought that the shaking was because my rims were chrome, and they couldn't be balanced as well as non-chrome wheels. So I think I'll try you suggestion of no center rings, and see if that helps. Btw, the center rings are the rings that go between the rim and the axle, right?

Resurfacing (any brake shop can do that for you) should eliminate the vibration while braking.

Speaking of rims and vibrations. I remember the first week when i had my konigs, the wheel locks were making slight vibrations on highways...when discount tire changed them (i'm guessing to another weight) then things were all right! So it could be the locks and/or center caps. I can relate to JoeB!
