gas mileage??

You can use the manual's numbers for a HIGH END estimate but the listed milage is with perfect driving conditions (perfect weather, perfect air/fuel mix, etc). The best way I've found is to drive your typical week (or 2 depending on how many miles you drive) then you'll get a good idea of when to refill... reset the trip meter each time you fill so just in case the gasoline gauge malfunctions (somehow... haha) you will know when you're close to the end of the tank *_*

02 Solara i4 getting about 300 miles per full tank with city only driving
I'm not sure about highway... school and work are within 5 miles... so yea hehe *_*

These numbers that cars MPG are rated with are based on certain things.

Highway - 55MPH constant, with cruise control.

When you have the power of a v6 and your are 17 year old male, you almost never go 55MPH like me

I average right around 20miles per gallon and i'm very happy with it. I've noticed some brands of gas do not give me as good of gas miles. You should also not run your tank to the bottom as was said before, and also try to choose a gas station that has either just gotten gas, or is on a busy road and constantly moves gas. It is essential to try and not get gas that has been sitting in thier tanks which hold thousands of gallons.

I thought it was bad to get gas from a station that just got gas because it kicks up debris from the bottom of the tank.

Either way, i've never seen a truck at a gas station so it's not much of a problem.

You should though get gas from a high volume gas station.

some of you get 500miles on a tank!! the most i've ever gotten is around 260-290 the first couple of weeks i had the car and was doing mostly hgwy. now i'm getting 200miles per tank!

maybe i'm w/ flip?? i'm only doing 4miles here and there so i must be only getting 12-13mpg.

does the car use more gas every time you start it up and turn it off, or something?? why would it make a difference if you drove a total of 200miles(let's say this is all hgwy driving at 55mph just to make a point). if you do it in 20trips instead of 3trips would it use more gas just b/c you're starting the car and then accelerating more??

any one know how many miles (or gallons) roughly are suppose to be left when the light comes on?

I write down all my mileage and keep tabs on my tripmeters. Tripmeter A is reset after every fillup and Tripmeter B is for the total miles I drove for one whole month. I drove more than 3,500 miles for the month of september (due to several nor cal trips) counting the one from this past weekend. I drive both long distance and short trips. I definitely know what my mileage is on my Solara. I have all the mileage and receipts with all the writing to prove it.

My mileage was calculated in non optimal conditions especially from the trip home from nor cal on Sunday. I faced alot of wind, drove several grades....had the cruise on 80mph but did several 100+ passes on many occassions (considering it only took me 5.5 hours to get from San Leandro to Riverside) with only one stop. I acheived my 29 mpg numbers in July. This last tank only got me 27.71 mpg to be exact.

Short trips is what kills your gas mileage...and its more rough on your powertrain. Put it this way, it takes LOTS of energy to move a 2 ton mass from a dead stop to any speed. Imagine doing it several times in one 4 mile trip....it's very frequent. 0-60, 0-45, 0-50 constantly as opposed to 60-80mph constantly for several hours on a freeway. Your RPM's stay constant as you have continuous momentum. Your assumption of making more trips is correct. The more you stop at a stand still, the more gas you will use because you are pushing that mass then stopping...pushing again then stopping.

Roughly, you should have 3-4 gals left when the ligh s on.

that sounds about right... when ever i fill up, i put in about 15 - 15.5 miles and the solara tank is 18.5. which means, i could have gone about 60 more miles til i'm totally dry. i can also smell the difference when i'm running low.

for the most part, i know if i'm hitting 350 on normal driving, to work and back and not too many other trips. i make frequent long trips, at least one every other month that is 500-600 miles one way. i've driven from fairfax,va to knoxville, tn in 6.5 hours, it is 500 miles. i've driven to atlanta from here, which is 600 miles in 9 hours. these times include stops, but the avg speed is about 75-80 mph. i get 30mpg on these trips. most of the time, the a/c is on. it really has surpassed my expectations from a pretty decent v6 engine.

hey, i just filled up today. i put in 16.2 gallons (that is when the light came on), and according to my tripometer i had driven 445 miles since the last fill-up. So that is about 27-28 mpg with a buncha short trips but also a buncha highway miles. Not bad, considering the way I drive. I have to get your opinions on RPM ranges in another post. Anyways, I was surprised however that the gas light comes on when there are still 2.5 gallons left in the tank. I thought you could drive 30 miles at the most after hte light came on, but 2.5 gallons should take you about 50-60.

You have an I4 don't you? That will get better gas mileage than the V6, so 27-28 mpg sounds about right.

yep, not the 30 mpg the car is rated, but acceptable i suppose, when i compare it to everyone else's on the forum. but, i did go through that tank VERY carefully, trying to drive as nicely as possible to use the least gas. my normal driving will probably only get me 410 miles outta 16 gallons, so closer to 25 mpg.

Missay wrote:correct me if i'm wrong, but a 99v6 sle auto is suppose to get 20mpg city (28hgwy??), right? wouldn't that mean that if there's an 18.5 gallon fuel capacity that in an ideal driving situation you should get a max of around 370miles each time you fill the tank??

i'm wondering if it's just my car or if it's the same for everyone else. i'll put in like 20bucks worth which gets me about 14-15gallons (about 1.29-1.35per gallon). shouldn't this mean that if i'm not doing any hgwy that i should get about 300 miles each fill?? true that i don't go ALL the way to empty...but my light is usually on by the time i fill up again. so i'm gonna guess that i leave at least 10miles in the tank before i fill. so should this still be 290ish miles? even if you take out for ac/heat...i don't have it on that much lately and i haven't battled traffic for a long time.

i'm only geting like 200miles though for every 20bucks that i put in. i average about 200-230miles before i need to fill again. no way is that 20mpg city!!

am i just not taking something into account?? i'm curious to see if everyone gets the same mileage that i do.

How do you get gas for so cheap? We live like 10 miles apart and i pay 1.49 hmm?

it probably has something to do with the fact that the post is eight months old!

you guys will hate me for this, but i live in atlanta, right now gas is EXPENSIVE at 1.29. back a year and a half ago it was about 90 cents a gallon, but i guess overall has averaged around a dollar a gallon.

Heh, you think $1.29 is expensive...super is about $1.60 here and it was much higher prior to the war.

Anyway, back on topic. I usually average about 19-23 MPG. I wish it were better but there is alot of stop and go on NJ highways, plus I push my engine pretty hard when theres open road.
