Laser

You might want to look into the new Escort ZR3 laser shifter. It will work with both the 8500 and the new sr7 radar detectors.

Very good point on the ZR3. I completely forgot about that one. I've seen it on display and it looks very promising. Here are some test results

I recently borrowed my friends valentine 1 and that thing goes off at every corner. But when i set the sesitivity down its pretty much useless. I was gonna purchase one but am scared about the hassle of it giving me so many false alerts, dunno if this happens to the rest of you, just thought it might help if you were thinking about buying one.

is there like a happy compromise between spending 3-400 dollars on the top end model, or something for around 100-150? maybe like a lower end Escort or Valentine without all the bells and whistles? i've already spent like a gazillion dollars on my car. i'm almost to the point where any more will make me cry. unless of course i can find a really cheap cf hood.

I got some Whistler all-band one w/ laser detection, RDD standby, and voice alerts that was on sale from Buy.com (40 bucks, one day sale) I think it was the DE1745. I got it as more of a toy than a necessity.

I have no experience with this stuff, but all Ive really learned so far is the liquor store runs on X band an the Pathmark runs on K band. I havent hit any speedtraps yet, so I have no idea if it work right, but the X band goes to full alert at this corner in front of my school.

Im not sure what it is, but im pretty sure that NJ outlawed the photo radar, so I have no idea what it is. I dont see anything, but I didnt really look very hard.

Additionally, I know that NJ is the last state to still predomantly use X band, which is the easiest to detect. Theoretically, even a crappy one should be decent in detecting X band, and maybe the other ones as well.

Ive heard that in actually detection, the 8500 is better, but the arrows on the V1 are invaluable. Theres not much research or reviewing done on cheaper radar detectors, so I dont think anyone really knows how they perform in respect to eachother.

True...from the top of my head yeah v1 was the one that set the standards...but 8500 has been kicking its butt since last year. Me: I'm a beltronics dude..i've got their 890, its cheaper...and enough to save my butt. Not to mention..in houston traffic..you can't speed in excess...everyone's speeding!

Do cops have the ability to sense a radar detector in use or is that just a rumor? I want to get one but I have to be a little more careful since I live in VA.

Its called VG-2. It is a radar detector detector. The better detectors are invisible to VG-2 including the V1 and 8500

The VG-2 is the radar-detector-dectector, or RDD as they call it. Mine can sense VG-2 in its midst, and shut itself off for, I think its 60 seconds, and looks again, and doesnt turn back on until its gone.

In other news, I got my first laser alert today, which needs line of sight to use, but I saw no cops anywhere around me.
(I think it was laser..it was either laser or VG-2 since they use the same light..I need to RTFM. I dont think theyd use VG-2 since dectectors are legal here.)

New Jersey, where the fast lane is always the one your currently in.

I notice no one is talking about BELtronics. I use the BEL 880(old model) but it has never let me down, even at 115mph on my way to school it gave me enough time to slow down, not much but enough.

Anyways...BEL's new model is the 995. Anyone have much experience with them?

The only tests I've seen that rate the 8500 better were b/c the incorporated price into the test, so the 8500 won b/c it was cheaper. I have a v1 and I think I've been saved from roughly 7 gagillion-zillion dollars in speeding tickets.
